The burst of accuracy in the market has been a given for months and no one was surprised by yesterday's announcement of the Statistical Service that the consumer price index rose to 8.8% in April, from 7.13% in March. After all, a first taste of where inflation is going was given last week by Eurostat, with the announcement of the harmonized index of consumer prices at 8.6%.
But even if there were no official numbers, the accuracy that exists in almost all products and services is now very much felt in the purchasing power of employees and retirees when they are asked to pay for anything.
Accuracy came to stay long enough, given that inflation in April reached historically high levels for decades and each month breaks one record after another.

This is something that concerns the Minister of Finance, Konstantinos Petridis, who at every opportunity emphasizes his concern about the risk of stagnant inflation and points out that the reasons for the increase in inflation are exogenous – mainly due to the war in Ukraine, rising oil and natural gas prices. gas, which had started since the outbreak of the pandemic, and the fact that 30% of grain production goes out of world production due to the situation in Ukraine and sanctions in Russia. The Stability Program 2022-2025, sent a few days ago by the Ministry of Finance to Brussels, includes the estimate that inflation will increase to 4.5% (for the whole) in 2022, & nbsp; it will slow down to 1.5% in 2023 and then it will be around 2% in 2024-2025.
The most important increases from last year
Yesterday's data of the Statistical Service analyzed by “Φ” show how much the prices of specific products increased in April compared to the same month last year. The category that stands out in the big increases is that of electricity, with an increase of 44.55% on an annual basis, of oil 41.24%, of gasoline 26.18% and of liquefied gas 34.55%.
In the food category, the following increases are recorded in relation to April '21: Bread and cereals 9.4%, rice 11.84%, flour 13.73%, bread 15.45%, pasta 9.19 %, breakfast cereals 3.58%. The increase is 7.46% in beef, 16.55% in pork, 4.63% in lamb, 17.75% in poultry, 7.42% in fresh fish and 20.71% in frozen seafood. p>
In dairy products the average price of milk, cheese and eggs increased by 3.07% from last April, of fresh whole milk 4.18%, of fresh low-fat milk 3.86%, of eggs 9.52%./p>
Large annual increases of 41.94% are recorded by the Statistical Service in vegetables, as well as in potatoes, where the increase is 48.81%. The average price of olive oil increased by 5.17% and margarine and other vegetable oils by 11.49%. The increase in the prices of soft drinks is 7.85%, of fruit juices 10.84%, of water 4.83%, of wine 4.53% and of beer 5.01%. In terms of home maintenance products, prices increased by 10.02%, plumbing services by 3.98%, electricians by 19.85%, oil painters by 8.85% and carpenters by 23.66%. >
According to the analysis by product and service category compared to April 2021, the largest changes were observed in the categories housing, water, electricity and gas (21.1%), transport (18.0%) and food and non-alcoholic beverages (11.0%). The biggest impact on the change in the CPI of April 2022 compared to April 2021 (units) had the categories transport (2.71), housing, water, electricity and gas (2.58) and food and non-alcoholic beverages (2 , 09). The Statistical Service reports that the prices of the 805 items and services included in the CPI are monitored and recorded once a month, except for some seasonal products (eg vegetables and fruits), meats and fuels, the prices of which are collected every week (every Thursday).
