Signing of a contract for Paphos Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan

The contract for the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan of Paphos was signed today Thursday at the Paphos Municipal Hall, in the presence of the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Yannis Karousos who stated that the cost of the study amounts to 230 thousand. Euro approximately and will be delivered in 14 months. The projects that will be proposed will be several tens of millions.

In his statements, Mr. Karousos described an important day for Paphos, both for the Municipality of Paphos and for the wider urban area, as the contract of the Paphos Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan was signed, which is, as he said, gospel for the projects, initiatives and actions that we need to do in the study area, so that we have a transition to alternative means of transport and to issues that will reduce pollutants.

Indicative, he said, are single lanes for bicycles, bicycle paths, lanes for bus traffic, pedestrianized areas, square areas, projects, he continued, "which in other provinces, such as Nicosia, we see implemented precisely because they had “The Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan is ready”.

Today's signature, the Minister of Transport said, includes the three municipalities of the province and fifteen urban and peri-urban communities of the Municipality of Paphos, adding that the study will be ready in 14 months. and the projects that will be proposed will be co-financed by the EU and by relevant funds in order to proceed with their implementation.

Mr. Karousos noted that the important s’ this elaboration of the study is for everyone to participate in the public consultation, to exchange their suggestions and ideas. He also said that the city of Paphos and the region in general can agree on a quite innovative Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan because it also combines tourism and with this Paphos will gain another advantage over other competitive destinations. 

< p>In Paphos, Mr. Karousos said, there are local rulers and Local Authorities who are ready to take on the political costs for the implementation of the decisions that will be made by the Paphos Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans, because the studies should not be done to stay in drawers but to implement and apply what they say after they are documented, with analyzes and recommendations.

He also mentioned that other cities abroad that implement Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans have developed their tourism and investments are being made in their areas, because as it has been proven this is in everyone's interest.

Besides, in his greeting the The Minister of Transport expressed his satisfaction at the signing of the Contract for the provision of services for the development of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUP) for the wider urban area of ​​Paphos District.

In the study area, he said,  included are 3 Municipalities – Paphos Municipality, Geroskipou Municipality and Peyia Municipality – and 15 Communities – Agia Varvara, Agia Marinouda, Armou, Achelia, Empa, Kissonerga, Lempa, Marathousta, Mesa Chorio, Mesogi, Tala, Timi, Tremythousa, Tsada and Chloraka.

The preparation of the Plan was assigned, after a tender, to the consortium “NAMA Consulting Engineers and Planners S.A.” – “NAMA S.A.” (Greece) and Transeuropean Consultants for Transport, Development and Information Technology S.A.- TREDIT S.A. (Greece)» for a cost of €237,405.00 including VAT and a completion period of 14 months.

He also noted that the Project is co-financed by the Cohesion Fund of the European Union at a rate of 85%, through the Operational Program: «Competitiveness and Sustainable Development”, and by 15% from national resources.

As he mentioned in his greeting, the  sustainable mobility is linked to the wider goals, to which Cyprus has committed itself at the European level, for sustainable cities, to deal with climate change, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to use energy more efficiently.

From for his part, the Mayor of Paphos Phaidonas Phaidonos noted that the preparation of the study is an excellent opportunity because, as he said, it will show which projects and where they should be done so that in the coming decades  our lives to be better and easier.

The population of our province as well as visitors will increase, he said, adding that "this is where a study will come to tell us documented where and which projects should to be done so that people can move around the city and its urban environment easily and quickly and in an environmentally friendly way».

He also pointed out that these projects  they are not expected to happen overnight, but will start in 2023 and 2024 and extend into an implementation period of at least the next 10-15 years.
