Conservative MP Sir Roger Gale for four decades was re-elected Chairman of the British Inter-Parliamentary Committee (APPG) for Cyprus at the General Assembly earlier this week.

Re-elected Also serving as Vice-Presidents are Lord Adonis (Labor) and Baroness Massey (Labor), as well as MPs Dr. Lisa Cameron (SNP), Pambos Charalambous (Labor), Christine Jardin (Liberal Democrats), Caroline (Synergis B) )

During the General Assembly, all the numerous members of the APPG reiterated their support for a just and functional solution to the Cyprus problem and the reunification of Cyprus on the basis of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation that is in line with the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.

The General Assembly gave the APPG the opportunity to discuss upcoming events and meetings that will contribute to raising awareness about the Cyprus issue.

Sir Roger thanked the United Cyprus National Federation (EKO UK), which is the Secretariat of the APPG, for its continued support. The MP stated, “I am pleased that we continue to have such a strong, cross-party committee working for ever closer ties between the UK and Cyprus. I am committed to the struggle for the reunification of Cyprus and the end of the unjust and illegal occupation of Turkey since they were elected in 1983 and, given the continuing illegal occupation, it is important that the APPG for Cyprus also has a very talented group of young MPs who are just as determined to see justice done for Cyprus. “

Sir Roger added that as someone who remembers the illegal Turkish invasion of Cyprus in the summer of 1974, “it was horrible to see the Russian invasion of Ukraine and to see similar atrocities happening again in Europe. The parallels between the two invasions and the occupations are sad and, as a cross-party parliamentary group, we express our support in both Ukraine and Cyprus. “

A few days earlier, APPG executives participated in a meeting with the High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus in the UK, Andreas Kakouris. The High Commissioner briefed APPG officials on the efforts and initiatives undertaken by the Cypriot government to resume negotiations on the reunification of Cyprus in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, including the proposal for Measures. >

He spoke of the dangers posed by President Erdogan's statements to create new ones through illegal unilateral actions that would undermine efforts for a solution and cited as a clear example the illegal “opening” of the besieged city in Varosi last year.

The High Commissioner also spoke about the strong support of the Republic of Cyprus in the European Union (EU) sanctions against Russia after the illegal invasion of Ukraine. However, he noted that the EU sanctions are at stake due to Turkey's refusal to implement them and also stressed that there is a gap of coverage due to the abnormal situation created by the ongoing occupation of Cyprus by Turkey.
