“Any form of upgrading of Turkey's relations with the EU, Turkey should first fulfill the three basic obligations it has undertaken”

Attention to the moves made in the framework of the rewarming of Euro-Turkish relations, the President of EDEK, Marinos Sizopoulos, recommended in his statements to journalists, on the sidelines of a trisage in memory of the murdered Doros Loizou , which took place on Friday at the cemetery of Saints Constantine and Helen, in Nicosia.

“We must be particularly careful in what we accept and what we expect, in order not to contribute and not to contribute to Turkey capitalizing on additional benefits, at the expense of the Republic of Cyprus, and much more without any intention of resolving the Cyprus issue, on the basis of a democratic, functional, fair solution, with full implementation of the European acquis throughout the Cypriot territory and with the guarantee of the four basic freedoms of the EU to all legal and permanent residents of the Republic of Cyprus”, said Mr. Sizopoulos, answering a question about the recent developments in Euro-Turkish relations.

The President of EDEK stated that it should be made clear that “as far as any form of upgrading of Turkey's relations with the EU is concerned, Turkey should first strong>to fulfill the three main obligations it has undertaken: the recognition of the Republic of Cyprus, the implementation of the Cypriot obligations it undertook towards the EU and, finally, the lifting of the veto for the participation of the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Cyprus in the joint meetings of the EU Defense Ministers with NATO”.

He also referred to the interconnection of Euro-Turkish movements with Turkey's accession to the EU, expressing the position that “this is something that cannot and should not be done, given that neither Turkey is currently interested in becoming a full member of the EU, nor the leading countries of the EU want Turkey to be a full member of the Union”.

“The struggle continues, the ideas do not are murdered'

Mr. Sizopoulos also spoke about the completion of 50 years “since the assassination of the hero poet Doros Loizos, during the attempt to assassinate the leader of the resistance, Vasos Lyssaridis, the leader who resisted the Junta of Athens, the illegal and criminal activity of EOKA B ' and in the treacherous coup of July 15, 1974”.

“The heroic death of Doros, as well as the lyrics of his poems, guide us to this day in our struggle for the liberation of our homeland and the prevention acceptance of any solution, which indirectly or directly legitimizes the partition or the political and military presence of Turkey in our country”, said the President of EDEK, and noted that “the struggle continues, ideas are not murdered”.

< p>The trisage took place in the presence of members and executives of EDEK, as well as Doros Loizou's sister, Anthoullas. Immediately after the trisago, wreaths were placed at the grave and those present sang the National Anthem.
