Sizopoulos: EDEK did not commit to any candidate

Frixos Dalitis

EDEK neither agreed nor withdrew from the creation of any bloc, states its president Marinos Sizopoulos categorically, in the reports for the withdrawal of his party to support a common candidate for the presidency of the Parliament. He confirms that until a little while before entering the Plenary Session, an intense background was in progress, in which, as his party points out, he did not agree to the creation of a cooperation for sharing the presidency of the Parliament by the two major parties, which, as he indicates in any case, they alone gathered 32 votes and did not need EDEK.

At the same time, he maintains that if some people wanted EDEK as a crutch to justify their own choices, they made a mistake. He also states that the cooperation of AKEL with DIKO for the voting of Nikolas Papadopoulos was at an advanced stage and he wonders why it was not completed in the end and whether even for that some responsibilities will be attributed to EDEK. Marinos Sizopoulos also talks about the 2023 presidential elections, the prospect of cooperation, as well as the election of Annita Dimitriou, in which he declares his party's readiness for cooperation.

– The background for the election of the Speaker of the Parliament is orgiastic. The information brought EDEK at noon in a block in support of Andros Kyprianou and in the afternoon it was in a common front with DIKO. The background says that an intra-party veto overturned the first perspective and your departure also led AKEL out of the front being formed…

-There was indeed a raging background for serving expediencies. EDEK was consciously absent from this. EDEK did not commit to supporting any candidate and did not ask for support from any party. It is obvious that some, in order to justify the failure of their plans and some the failure of the promises they made to third parties, try to transfer the responsibility to others. EDEK neither agreed nor withdrew from forming a bloc to support a proposal for a rotating presidency between the two largest parties. Since the two major parties would participate in this, what was the need for EDEK? DISY and AKEL collected 32 out of 56 votes and could elect a Speaker of Parliament from the first ballot. Why did the other parties that participated in the bloc not vote for Andros Kyprianou as they had promised to be elected? It would collect 22 votes against 21 of Mrs. Dimitriou. If some people wanted EDEK as a crutch to justify their own choices, they were wrong. It is also known that the cooperation of AKEL with DIKO for the voting of Mr. Papadopoulos was at an advanced stage. Why was it not completed? And is EDEK responsible for this? The excuses put forward do not stand the torment of criticism. Let them be honest and public, let them justify their choices and let them apologize to their voters. On this occasion, I would like to remind you that some people, in order to reduce the value of EDEK's stance on the budget vote and what it capitalized for the benefit of the citizens, had supported and insisted that there was an agreement for the Presidency of the Parliament. What do they have to say today? Will they apologize publicly or bypass it as usual?

– Does the promotion of Mrs. Dimitriou say anything about the political scene? Does it send a message?

-The promotion of Mrs. Dimitriou will send the right message if at the end of her term the report will be positive. From EDEK's side, even if we did not vote for it, we will cooperate constructively with it, as long as it wants it, for the best possible operation of the Parliament. We wish her good luck in the difficult task she undertook.
