The new stricter measures aimed at limiting the spread of the coronavirus were recently locked during the meeting of the Council of Ministers. As we wrote yesterday, the new measures will be valid from Sunday at 5:00 until January 31.

In our daily life, 8998 returns for our travels. Every citizen will be able to send two sms daily for necessary transportation, while the traffic will end at 9 p.m. as today. In general, we will be able to send sms for transportation based on the eight categories that were valid last March.

Ladies and gentlemen rejoice,

I want to wish everyone a happy new year with safety and health, the two precious goods that have been threatened in recent months by the unprecedented pandemic. You all understand the seriousness of the situation and the criticality of the moments. I'm sure you follow what is happening in the rest of the world. In contrast to the first wave of the pandemic, the immediate goal is no longer to eradicate cases and eradicate the virus, but to drastically reduce the incidence and keep the number of patients at controlled levels, in order to give breath to the Health System./p>

From the summer onwards we maintained several restrictive measures, which helped us to control the spread of the virus and to prepare for this new wave. We have taken additional local measures, as well as targeted measures, in an effort to reduce the spread of the virus and protect our vulnerable fellow human beings.

Unfortunately, the result shows that they did not deliver all the measures to the desired point for many reasons. For months now, a superhuman effort has been made, day and night, under very difficult conditions. Thanks to this effort, Cyprus was able to save time to safeguard the Health System, which we strengthened with staff, infrastructure and consumables. However, as we have said many times, all this has a limit. We are already on the red line and drastic measures are needed to not live what we are away from, that is, to see people die helpless, because we do not have beds available. We never want to experience this, we will not allow it to happen and we will do everything to prevent it.

I will not tire you with statistics and numbers. After hearing the recommendations of the Scientific Advisory Committee, the Council of Ministers, in the context of the efforts to curb the outbreak of the pandemic, decided to implement stricter measures to limit the synchronization and movement. The new measures will take effect on Sunday, January 10, 2020, at 5 in the morning and until January 31 at midnight. In fact, for the next three weeks we will have to stay in our homes, in our shelters, to stop the spread of the virus. The effort is aimed at drastically reducing social and professional gatherings in homes and workplaces, because that is where most cases are identified.

In general and indicatively, the new measures provide the following: >

Prohibition of traffic from 9 pm to 5 am the next day.
Prohibition of gatherings, public or social events (regardless of private or public space, indoor or outdoor). < Prohibition of gatherings in open public places, such as squares, dams, picnic areas, marinas, etc., except for the purposes of physical sports in parks, linear parks and beaches, provided that they do not exceed two people.
Text messaging only up to two text messages per day per person. The reasons for which the movement is allowed, will be given to you in detail immediately upon the completion of the conference.
Mandatory teleworking in the public and wider public sector and the Local Government with the exception of the Essentials Services, which are included in the Decree to be issued within the day.
The Divine Liturgy in the sacred temples/places of religious worship is performed without the presence of believers. Believers can come to the premises only for individual prayer, provided that the observance of health protocols will be ensured. Religious weddings/baptisms/funerals are performed with a maximum of 10 people.
Businesses that do not suspend their operations include, but are not limited to, construction sites and companies related to the construction sector, manufacturing sector, retail trade in beverages and food and other retail trade enterprises to be designated by the Ministry of Labor.
Private companies/services that remain in operation are promoted teleworking, with regulation for simultaneous physical presence of 15% of their staff, with a maximum number of employees that can be physically present of 20 people per business premises.
Businesses that suspend their operations include: barbershops and hairdressers, beauty salons, tattoo parlors, theaters, cinemas, auditoriums, outdoor and outdoor amphitheaters, restaurants and nightclubs, shopping malls dance, other relevant schools.
Education at all levels will be provided through distance education, in accordance with the guidelines sent to the schools by the Ministry of Education.
Nurseries, nurseries and kindergartens and pre-primary and special education remain in operation.
Class A professional championship matches are allowed to be played without spectators. All other tournaments, as well as sports activities for people under 18, are suspended. Category B 'and C' championships will be able to train with relevant arrangements.

In parallel with the above measures, our strategy envisages conducting even more diagnostic tests, so that we have a more complete picture of the epidemiological situation in the community. At the same time, it is launched in addition to the population control program with rapid tests, in addition to targeted control in the private companies and in the public and wider public sector that remain in operation.

During these three weeks and the period that will follow, we will continue the vaccination program according to the plan to cover the vulnerable groups of the population. As you know, so far two vaccines have been licensed out of the six agreements concluded by the European Commission and consequently Cyprus. Until the rest of the vaccines are licensed, the vaccination rate is de facto slow. However, the goal is to vaccinate a vital section of the population, front-line professionals and our high-risk fellow human beings, in order to allow us to tackle the coronavirus with more confidence and efficiency. But until we see the desired results from the vaccination, we must not rest, since the immunity of people who are now vaccinated will have visible results in February.

Ladies and gentlemen,

The second wave of the pandemic is much faster than the first, a fact that scientists attribute to the new strain of the virus, which was also detected in Cyprus. The rapid spread of the virus multiplies the cases, resulting in an increase in cases that require hospitalization. The increase of patients and especially those who need specialized care in an Intensive Care Unit is the critical indicator that determines the decisions of all Governments, in all countries plagued by the health crisis. The measures we are taking today aim at lowering this index to safe levels in order to be able to offer quality health services to those who need them. Prohibition measures are not an end in themselves. We have exhausted all the margins until we reach the restrictions we are announcing today, but the options, unfortunately, are not many.

The Government from the very beginning has set as a goal the preservation of the supreme good of Public Health but also limiting the losses of our fellow human beings due to the disease. With this in mind, we have made these decisions in order to avoid this nightmare that we have seen in other countries. One way for all of us to continue the effort, to support the health professionals, to give breath to the Health System, to guard our fellow human beings who are in danger, to protect our loved ones.

Let us not let them all be lost. the sacrifices that have been made since the beginning of this pandemic until today. Let us gather our strength to overcome this test as well.
