The German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, warned in a meeting he had today with Chinese President Xi Jinping about the damage it can cause to "the entire international order" Russia's war in Ukraine, noting that the war and Russia's "armament" they are against the basic principle of the inviolability of borders, enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations. Scholz and Xi Jing stressed the importance of German-Chinese cooperation.
In particular, Mr. Scholz referred to the importance of German-Chinese cooperation in the fight against climate change, stressing that only together can we find solutions , to stop climate change and 'manage the green energy transition in a socially just way'.
He further warned of the danger of nuclear escalation, making it clear that the threat of using nuclear weapons should not even be raised. He added, addressing the President of China, that "I would like to discuss today how we can contribute more to a just peace in Ukraine".
For his part, the Chinese President praised bilateral relations with Germany, stressing that the two countries have great potential for equal cooperation, but should be cautious about protectionism and objectively examine production potential. For the Chinese President, cooperation is not a "risk", but a guarantee of stable relations and an opportunity for the future, while he noted that "we must further develop bilateral relations from a strategic point of view".
Prior to his meeting with Mr. Scholz, the Chinese President had stated that bilateral relations with Germany have always been stable, adding that as long as the principles of mutual respect, seeking common ground despite differences and learning from each other are upheld on the other hand, bilateral relations are able to continue to develop steadily. He emphasized, in fact, that in this new era of turmoil it is necessary to prioritize cooperation between the great powers, noting that China and Germany are "globally the under’ number two and three economies»?, which is why the steady development of their relations can affect not only the Eurasian area, but also the whole world.
As German publications report, the German Chancellor had the opportunity to meet with representatives of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Shanghai.
Maximilian Butek, from the said Chamber, stated that competition with Chinese companies is on a level playing field in the high-tech, automotive and renewable energy sectors, while he noted that German companies need to look at where they can become more competitive and where a level playing field needs to be created competition, in order to be able to operate in the market.
And that's because a large part of the roughly 5,000 German businesses in China complain about increasingly unfair conditions, for example being cut off as foreigners from essential networks and services. Chancellor Solz has pledged to raise the issue in his policy talks, stressing how important it is for businesses to access public tenders.
At a time when the EU is considering tariffs on electric cars from China, as response to price dumping, German carmakers oppose tariffs as China is their biggest market and fear retaliation.
Nor did the Chancellor in Shanghai come out in favor of tariffs as being considered by the EU , instead emphasized the importance of competitiveness and open markets.
The Presidents of the Boards of Directors of the Mercedes-Benz and BMW companies, who are accompanying the Chancellor on his trip to China, emphasized that they seek to expand the activity in China and warned of the effects of a trade dispute, while opposing measures being considered by the EU in response to price dumping and a glut of electric cars from China.
