Some are the minister, others are RAEK for the EAC

Chrysanthos Manolis

The content of the lengthy reply letter of the Minister of Energy to the Secretary General of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanos, on various hot topics, caused upset on various fronts. Stefanou's letter was sent on January 24 and Natasa Pileidou's reply on January 28. Substantial excerpts from the letter were published in the Saturday edition of “F”, while the letter itself was published in philenews.

What mainly caused a stir from the content of Ms. Pileidou's answer were her references to AKEL's request for bids for the purchase of really cheap electricity from photovoltaics, in order to reduce the total price of the EAC energy mixture. for the benefit of all consumers, including household and small businesses.

As we wrote in Saturday's edition, Ms. Pileidou claims that holding tenders in Cyprus, before the operation of the competitive energy market (probably next October) is contrary to the EU recommendations, something that is strongly disputed by EAC circles but also private actors in the energy sector, as well as by AKEL executives. The dissenters cite specific examples from other EU countries – which make the most of bidding, securing prices far below what many RES parks sell in Cyprus) and reject the view that bidding is just increase in the purchase price in each country. For this aspect we will return to the next edition, with the views of the minister and those who disagree with her.

Can the EAC or not?

Questions and even irritation were caused by Ms. Peleidou's report on the EAC's right to hold, today, before the operation of the competitive market, bidding competitions for the purchase of cheap electricity from renewable sources. Energy actors wondered, speaking to “F”, how it is possible for the competent minister to recognize in the EAC the right to request bids for the purchase of green energy, at the same time that the competent authority, CERA, has issued a regulatory decision prohibiting to the EAC to buy energy from RES producers.
