Within the next two months, a decision will be made on the acquisition of equipment of the National Guard that will strengthen the air defense of the Republic of Cyprus. Speaking on state television, Defense Minister Charalambos Petridis said bids had been submitted by many countries for air defense weapons systems, which provide protection, both on land and at sea.
Mr. Petridis said that the National Guard is being upgraded and updated based on new technological data, adding that in recent years, 18 contracts have been signed regarding equipment.
Mr. Petridis also stated that a joint exercise of the National Guard with the United States at the level of special forces will be completed tomorrow. He announced that further exercises will be held with other countries in the coming period.
The Minister of Defense underlined that the Republic of Cyprus has very good cooperation with France and indicated that in this context, the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle will soon be in Cyprus.
