The “president” of the secessionist province of South Ossetia announced tonight that he will hold a referendum on July 17 on the question of the union of the region with Russia , broadcasts the Reuters agency, referring to the Russian Tass.
Moscow recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia after the lightning war with Georgia in August 2008. It provided financial support to both regions, offered Russian citizenship to its residents, and stationed thousands of soldiers there.
