Spain: Hundreds of people have left their homes due to fire

A fire in the Estremadura region of western Spain has destroyed up to 14,800 hectares of land and forced 550 people from their homes, with strong winds complicating firefighters' efforts to bring it under control, as emergency services said today.

"There are very strong gusts of wind that are increasing speed and development, making firefighting efforts difficult," Army Emergency Operations Command Commander David Barona told state television. 24H.

"Smoke spreads at low altitude and makes it difficult for aerial vehicles to access the area".

Up to 250 firefighters are working in the Pinofranceado area, in the province of Cáceres near the border with Portugal.

Authorities have ordered an evacuation up to 550 inhabitants from villages in the area. According to the authorities, the fire is due to natural causes.

An unusually dry winter in parts of southern Europe after three years of below-average rainfall in Spain increases the fire risk.
