Sponsorships and competition for energy storage from RES

Chrysanthos Manolis

The Ministry of Energy is preparing sponsorship plans for the installation of energy storage systems, both central and in combination with Renewable Energy projects, in order to increase the power of photovoltaics, wind turbines and other RES systems. The information on the granting of sponsorships for the installation of the (very expensive, for the time) storage systems was made yesterday by the Minister of Energy, Natasa Pileidou, in the context of a speech read during the conference organized yesterday by the Parliamentary Energy Committee, entitled “Energy transition, storage technologies and hydrogen”.

Ms. Pileidou stated that studies carried out in the framework of the National Plan for energy and climate, showed that the use of storage systems, in combination with the implementation of our electricity interconnection with Israel and Greece, can by 2030 lead to RES penetration in our energy mix that will exceed 50%. According to her, energy storage will increase self-consumption, improve the forecast of RES producers (s.s. in terms of production of their systems per day or per half hour, in the context of the competitive electricity market) and will lighten the load of network substations.

“It is for these reasons,” said the minister, “that the Ministry of Energy is preparing Sponsorship Plans for the installation of energy storage systems, both central and in combination with RES projects. With the first announcements of the Plans being planned within 2022, we submitted a request for securing € 40 million within the framework of the Fair Transition Fund, with the possibility of increasing it to € 80 million “.
