Some archaeologists believe that they have discovered the origin of the prehistoric Stonehenge monument, after finding the remains of a stone circle from antiquity in Wales, which may have been demolished and rebuilt hundreds of years later, in England.

Among Britain's most recognizable landmarks, the Stones of Stonehenge attracts tourists from all over the world, as well as people looking for a spiritual connection to the past. However, the exact purpose of their creation remains unknown.

In 2015, a team of archaeologists discovered that some of the monument's rocks came from a quarry on the Preseli Hills off the west coast of Wales, more than 150 miles (250 kilometers) away.

Researchers from the University of London now claim that some of the rocks originally formed an even older monument in Wales. In fact, they have discovered important correlations between Stonehenge and the monument in Wales. At least one of the blue rocks in Stonehenge matches one of the receptor holes found in Wales.

Parker Pearson, a professor of archeology at the University of Wales who led the research, suggested the rocks must have moved as people living in Wales migrated, taking their monuments with them and relocating them to present-day Stonehenge.

“It simply came to our notice then. “Many of the residents probably left, taking the rocks – their ancient identities – with them,” Pearson told the BBC.
