Storm of reactions in the occupied territories for an anti-LGBT+ article

A storm of reactions has erupted in the occupied territories on the occasion of an opinion article in the newspaper ” Cyprus” which is directed against LGBTI people.

The reason for the new development was the article of the new director of the newspaper, Ozer Kanli, which targets basic individual freedoms.

According to Özgür Gazete, the Turkish Cypriot Human Rights Platform (İHP), consisting of five constituents and 9 civil society organizations, condemned the article titled “Attacks on our national values, family and social structure” which was recently published in “Cyprus”.

According to the platform's announcement, the well-known journalist from the nationalist T/k Right, who was recently “appointed head of the media group founded with the AKP chapter” is the author of an opinion piece, “which contains rhetoric hate against LGBTI+ people”.

In a written statement, the platform said that as organizations that defend human rights, they condemn Mr Kanli's hate speech. “We must not forget that with the amendment made to the criminal code in 2020, it is a criminal offense to utter words that cause hatred and humiliation of LGBTI+ people. In his article published on December 29, 2022, Ozer Kanli equates the existence of LGBTI+ people with 'murder', 'immorality' and 'theft' and targets them,” the statement reads.

At issue article Mr. Kanli focused on a survey recently conducted by the Queer Cyprus Association for social awareness purposes. The investigation was directed at Turkish Cypriot teachers.

Turkish Cypriot businessman Asia Nadir recently transferred the Cyprus Group to a company that, according to information from the occupied territories, has relations with the conservative government of Turkey.
