The Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry had contacts in Cairo to strengthen trade and business relations and cooperation with Egypt in the fields of electricity, RES and hydrocarbons. & Nbsp; Natasa Pileidou.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Energy during her two-day working visit to Cairo, the Minister, among other things, held separate meetings with her Egyptian counterparts, Ministers of Electricity and Oil. and Trade. In addition, he led a business delegation from Cyprus, which participated on Monday

in a business forum co-organized by the YEEB and the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in cooperation with the Cyprus-Egypt Business Association.

On Sunday, the Minister of Energy met in person with the Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Dr Mohamed Shaker El – Markabi, to discuss a range of issues such as the joint promotion of energy storage, hydrogen and renewable energy projects, with an emphasis on floating photovoltaic parks.

In addition, the Ministers reviewed the progress of the electricity interconnection project of Cyprus, Egypt, Greece and participated in the opening of the first meeting of the Technical Committee for the interconnection arm concerning Cyprus and Egypt. The establishment of the Technical Committee is provided by the Memorandum of Understanding for the electricity interconnection of Cyprus and Egypt, signed by the two Ministers in Nicosia, on October 16, 2021.

On Sunday night, Ms. Pileidou presented to the Ambassadors of the member countries and observers of the East Mediterranean Gas Forum, the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency of the Organization for 2022 and the events and meetings that will take place in the near future.

< p>Today, before the start of the business forum, the Minister of Energy had the opportunity to discuss with the Minister of Petroleum of Egypt Tarek El Molla, the international developments in the field of energy due to the crisis caused by the war in Ukraine and the need to create it. Eastern Mediterranean Energy Corridor for energy security and diversification of Europe's gas sources and routes.

In this context, the two Ministers also discussed the progress of the work of the technical groups on the gas pipeline that will transport gas from the “Aphrodite” field to Egypt, as well as the initiatives to be taken by the international organization East Mediterranean Gas Forum, of which Cyprus holds the Presidency in 2022, for the exploitation of the deposits of the region.

Afterwards, the Minister participated in the Cyprus-Egypt business forum, where as a keynote speaker she presented to the participants the competitive advantages of our country as an international business center and opportunities for cooperation in specific areas, such as the green transition, bilateral trade, information and communication technologies, higher education and medical services.

He also referred to the high level professional services offered in Cyprus and informed about the operation of the “Company Facility Unit” at the IEEB. As Ms. Pileidou explained, the Unit can help Egyptian businessmen to operate in the EU, aiming at the fast and efficient processing of requests received from foreign companies for the establishment and operation of a company in Cyprus.

The forum was attended by a large number of Cypriot companies, from various sectors of the economy, meeting with more than 70 Egyptian companies. In addition, a representative of the Ministry of Tourism had a series of contacts with agencies from Egypt to investigate the level of interest in tourism and, in particular, the cruise sector.

The official visit of the Minister of Energy to Egypt ended with a meeting which he had at noon with the Minister of Trade and Industry of Egypt Nevin Gamea. The Ministers explored the ways of developing cooperation between businessmen from Cyprus and Egypt, as well as the prospects of increasing trade flows between the two countries in goods and services.

Ms. Pileidou made a special reference to her effort. Cyprus to promote both exports of pharmaceuticals and aquaculture products as well as Cypriot services with export potential, such as higher education and medical and professional services.
