There is no problem in the supply chain and stocks of the supermarkets, said the Executive Secretary of the Pancyprian Supermarkets Association, Andreas Hatziadamou, reassuring the public, after the concerns caused by relevant publications or reports in the media.
At the same time, he noted that the proper functioning of the competition in the Cypriot supermarkets has so far managed to prevent the large increase in the prices of goods.
“There is no problem with stocks. The supply chain is operating normally “, he said, adding that the problems of the international food crisis, which concern raw materials and cereals, are something different.

As he said, after communication with the members of the Association, there is full adequacy and full feedback of the supermarkets.
Regarding the accuracy observed in various products, Mr. Hatziadamou stated that there are indeed price increases in products, however the only sector in which competition operates is that of supermarkets.
“This allows the consumer to enjoy still reasonable prices and not as much as they should have been, according to the suppliers' increases and the other continuous increases that the supermarkets have had in recent months. “If it were not for this competition, the consumer would find prices double and triple on supermarket shelves,” he said.
He added that supermarkets have been absorbing the increases for too long, which unfortunately continue.
Asked whether they have noticed any differences in the consumption habits of Cypriots lately, Mr. Hatziadamou said that at present they have not changed much, although there is a concern about the uncertainty that exists and the increases that are observed. He noted that consumer habits have already changed in recent years and after the crisis of 2013, with the consumer making more visits, with a smaller basket. At the same time, the consumer has become more selective, demanding and is chasing offers, rewarding the cheaper ones. >
Asked whether the economic conditions are expected to negatively affect the supermarket sector, Mr. Hatziadamou said that after the closure of supermarkets and stores that followed the crisis of 2013, now the situation is more normal, while the sector proved to be particularly resilient during the crisis. However, he added that there is still some concern about what the industry will face in the future.
As he said, the supermarkets have been completely modernized, while the small stores have joined larger chains.
“Retail trade is now much more well-structured, they have collaborations with abroad, they have expertise and they have nothing to envy from abroad, there is a lot of experience and know-how,” he noted.
