The Government expressed support for the daily struggle of children with cancer, through Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letympiotis.

In his opening statement during the regular media briefing, Mr. Letymiotis said that “February 15 has been established as World Childhood Cancer Day honoring all children and their families who experience the effects of the disease, recognizing the pain and their difficulties and raising awareness among the global community”.

Cancer and leukemia are the second most common cause of death in children after accidents, he said, and the first cause of death in children due to illness.

Every year, the Government Spokesperson said, at least 400,000 new cases of cancer and leukemia are diagnosed worldwide in children and adolescents, but the real number is probably higher, while “in Cyprus from 1998 to 2020, 957 cases of cancer and leukemia were recorded in people under 19 years old. In our country, on average, approximately 42 new cases of cancer and leukemia are detected in this age group”.

“Early diagnosis and correct treatment contribute to the cure of most of children, he said, while in developed countries the cure rate for children from cancer and leukemia ranges over 80%”, he noted.

In this battle fought by the children and their families, the contribution of all of us is needed, said the Government Spokesperson, noting that “with our support, help and care we must strengthen the the daily struggle of doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers, physical therapists, families and others to ensure that young patients receive the best possible treatment.”

He also said that the children and their families are supported by a large group of doctors, nurses and many other specialists at the Pediatric Oncology-Pediatric Hematology Center of the Archbishop Makarios III Hospital in Nicosia whom he thanked for the work they do as well as the volunteer blood and bone marrow donors and the voluntary and Non-Governmental Organizations that work tirelessly and continue the battle against childhood and adolescent cancer.
