Support of 39.5 million euros to T/c from the Commission in the framework of the 2024 Aid Program

The EU supports the Turkish Cypriot community with 39.5 million euros

Στιξη 39.5 εκρστο&sigma ΤκΚισλιο ;ρματοςθειας The European Commission approved the annual action plan on Tuesday 2024 for the Turkish Cypriot community, allocating €39.5 million in new funding to facilitate the reunification of Cyprus and support the socio-economic development of the community.</p>
<p>A Commission press release states that the 2024 annual program offers further support for the implementation of key flagship projects of the Aid Programme, such as the package of measures for the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Halloumi/Hellim and the strengthening of trade through the Green Line. </p>
<p>He also notes that PDO Halloumi/Hellim is the first protected designation of the EU that is open not only to producers from the areas of Cyprus that are under the effective control of the Government, but also to Turkish Cypriot producers.</p>
<p>It is added that funding from the 2024 program will support Turkish Cypriot producers “to comply with EU food safety and animal health standards, which is a condition for placing their products on the EU market”.</p >
<p>The Commission also states that a grant scheme for stakeholders in the dairy and agri-food sectors will also help producers meet the standards required to sell Halloumi/Hellim that complies with PDO specifications, beyond the Green Line and to avail themselves of the benefits of this trade.</p>
<p>In line with the objectives of the EU Green Deal, the program provides funding for the construction of a bi-community solar power plant, if the two communities reach an agreement. The project will increase cross-community cooperation in the fields of energy efficiency and green electricity generation.</p>
<p>It is added that the grants and technical assistance will be directed towards the development of the private sector, supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs ) and entrepreneurs to develop and consolidate their businesses.</p>
<p>Technical assistance will also be provided in the field of education, with personalized support and laboratory equipment for teachers and workers to enhance their skills in lifelong learning and special needs education.</p>
<p>As stated, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriot students will receive support to jointly attend the International Baccalaureate program at one of the peace-oriented United World Colleges (UWC), it added.</p>
<p>To build trust between of the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities, the program also includes the continued support of the Commission of Inquiry for the Missing Persons in Cyprus, as well as the restoration of the cultural heritage of Cyprus, the announcement notes.</p>
