In a new written statement, the Turkish Cypriot unions KTÖS, KTOEÖS, EMU-SEN, KTAMS, KOOP-SEN, BES, BASIN-SEN, ÇAĞ-SEN, DEV-İŞ say they await the Supreme Court's decision on the issue of "mixed marriages". In case the court's decision is negative, the unions will appeal to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

«One of the most important social problems created due to the Cyprus problem is the inability to obtain citizenship of the Republic of Cyprus for marriages between citizens of the Republic of Cyprus and citizens of other countries and their children”, says the written announcement.

It is added that "with an optimistic estimate, 30,000 people expect to acquire the citizenship of the Republic of Cyprus. With a new study we carried out, we recorded that 6300 people have not been able to obtain the citizenship of the Republic of Cyprus for various reasons until today. It is not possible to accept the mentality of the Greek Cypriot political elite, which approaches the issue of the citizenship of the Republic of Cyprus as a political tool and an object of negotiation.

The announcement refers to the progress and details of the cases that started in Cypriot courts on the specific issue. Also, reference is made to the fight being waged by various social bodies.

In the context of the aforementioned, it is also underlined that the examination of the appeal to the Supreme Court is "expected to be completed within a year at the latest".

"In the event of a negative decision by the Supreme Court, all trade unions are determined to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights", the announcement states.
