Tal Dilian… makes a new "career" in Greece - The role of INTELEXA in citizen surveillance

The curious tolerance shown by the Cypriot authorities to the former Israeli spy, Tal Dillian, and his company, which specializes in surveillance, probably encouraged him to expand his activities in Greece, “launching” his new product under the name Predator (predator).

The research of journalists Tasos Teloglou and Eliza Triantafyllou, on the occasion of the observation of journalist Thanasis Koukakis, brought to the surface creepy evidence of the way in which people are targeted, who then become victims of a breach of their privacy. The research was published on the site Inside Story.

Bait with pseudo-sites

According to the article, the circuit that conducts the monitoring has created a group of sites, which have names that resemble well-known websites. The goal was to trick the targets into installing the tracking software on their mobile phone. From there, things took their course. The domaims (sites) that had been created, according to Inside Story, exceed 43, which had already been identified by META (Facebook). “One of them was a variation of the informative site of Michalis Ignatios, hellasjournal (hellasjournal [.] Company), which focuses on Greek-American relations with an impact on the Greek community, which also has an English version. This particular news page was paraphrased two more times (hellasjournal [.] Website, heiiasjournai [.] Com). The second site purchased in July 2020 was altsantiri [.] News.

According to the research of specialized technicians on behalf of Inside Story, the known domains-traps that have been purchased so far amount to 50. They are part of the total of 310 sites identified by the parent company of Facebook – this is a percentage of almost 15 % That seems to have been set up for Greek-speaking purposes. “Apart from blogspot.edolio5.com, which infected the mobile phone of journalist Thanasis Koukakis (and was not on the META list), Inside Story revealed six more websites that look like well-known Greek ones and were also registered to trap mobile phones.”

In the list of fake domains, first place by far are variants of well-known news websites such as kathimerini.news, protothema.live, efsyn.online, tovima.live (more than half of a total of 50 websites). “Several domains similar to those of vehicle manufacturers were also used as bait, e.g. nissan.gr [.] com, bmw.gr [.] com and suzuki.gr [.] com. The list also includes some geographically focused websites, such as orchomenos.news, politika [.] Bid (similar to politikalesvos [.] Gr) and stonisi [.] News. There are other websites of more special interest, such as e.g. paok-24 [.] com (the only sports team on the list), the hempower [.] shop that looks like a cannabis store with an online store and headquarters outside Corinth, itcgr [.] live, close to the website a well-known company undertaking feasibility studies on advanced technology and sepenet [.] gr [.] com, which imitates the website of a public body, the Labor Inspectorate, possibly targeting a government official. Another worrying indication of who may have been targeted by this spyware is the fact that one of the sites that was tampered with to deceive potential targets is kranosgr.com (which did kranos.gr [.] Com ), an informative website aimed primarily at members of the Greek Armed Forces and security forces.

In the network of fake domains there are several that refer to well-known service providers, such as Viva (viva [ .] gr [.] com), Cosmote (ebill [.] cosmote [.] center), Uber (ube [.] gr [.] com) and youtube (youtube [.] gr [.] live ) ».

What Predator does

According to a three-page report by Citizen Lab, cited by Inside Story, Predator is turning the phone into an advanced monitoring device. “Predator is a monitoring tool that gives its operator full and ongoing access to the target [mobile] device. “Predator allows the operator to export secret passwords [files], files, photos, web browsing history, contacts as well as identity data (such as information about the mobile device)”, we read in the same document of the Citizen Lab. “Predator can capture screen captures, record the user's entries [on his mobile phone], and can also activate the device's microphone and camera. This allows attackers to monitor any action taken on or near the device, such as in-room conversations.

Predator also allows its operator to record text messages being sent or received (including those sent through “encrypted applications” or applications that allow messages to disappear, such as WhatsApp or Telegram), as well as simple and VoIP phone calls (including telephone conversations via “encrypted” applications) ” .

In other words, those who have infected a target cell phone can monitor from personal moments with the family and people close to them, to confidential business conversations.
