The ban on Afghan women working with the United Nations is an "internal social issue" in Afghanistan, the Taliban government reacted today after the UN Security Council adopted a resolution denouncing the said ban.

The UN Security Council unanimously condemned on Thursday the Taliban government's ban on Afghan women working for the UN in Afghanistan and called on Taliban leaders to “swiftly reverse” a crackdown on women's and girls' rights.

The decision — authored by the United Arab Emirates and Japan — calls the ban “unprecedented in the history of the United Nations,” underscoring " ?the absolutely necessary role of women in Afghan society" and states that banning Afghan women from working for the UN "undermines human rights and humanitarian principles".

The 15 members of the UN Security Council in a unanimous resolution on Thursday condemned the decision taken by the Taliban government in early April to extend to the United Nations a ban that prevents NGOs from recruiting Afghan women as staff, which undermines &quot ?human rights and humanitarian principles".

“According to international norms and the strong commitment of (UN) member states to respect the sovereign choices of Afghanistan, this issue is a social internal affair in Afghanistan, which does not affect foreign states,” the Afghan ministry announced. of Foreign Affairs.

"We remain committed to guaranteeing all the rights of Afghan women, while underlining that the diversity of opinions must be respected and not politicized,", the ministry added.

The Security Council also made a broader appeal to the Taliban government to “quickly withdraw” all its policies that limit women's fundamental freedoms and called on "all states and organizations to exert their influence" to achieve their repeal.

"The world will not remain silent while women in Afghanistan are erased from society," commented United Arab Emirates Ambassador Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, who co-authored the text with Japan.

Since returning to power in August 2021, the Taliban have returned to the strict interpretation of Islam that had marked their first rule (1996-2001) and intensified restrictive measures against of women.

Secondary schools and universities are closed to girls. Women are also excluded from many jobs in the public sector and do not even have the right to enter parks, gardens, gyms and public baths.
