Tatar:

Ready for a second informal meeting, he said he was Ersin Tatar, saying he would try to show Antonio Guterres how the circle could be squared, as the UN secretary-general had said after the informal meeting in Geneva.

Leaving the occupied territories for Brussels, where he will meet with the UN Secretary General on Friday, the Turkish leader said that they are fighting hard for an agreement in Cyprus on the basis of equality and “to maintain our equality”, reiterating the first of the six points of the proposal tabled in Geneva for the acceptance of sovereign equality and equal status. Without the basis of equality, there can be no agreement, “after all, everyone saw this,” he added.

He also reiterated that in his meeting with Jane Hall Luth he expressed his annoyance because the UN Secretary General would meet with President Anastasiadis in Brussels, saying that he should definitely see Mr. Guterres himself. So, he said, the invitation came and he is going to Brussels to meet with the UN Secretary General.

He believes, he said, that in every meeting “a little more ground is being gained”, saying that he expresses to a large extent the will of the Turkish Cypriot people and his struggle for existence in Cyprus under his own “state”. He said that Mr. Guterres may be the Secretary General who knows the Cyprus issue better and will be able to explain the situation to the UN Security Council.

“The issues to be discussed there are clear. Anastasiadis stated yesterday that he will never accept our request for sovereign equality. Of course, this is his view. We are still in the same place. If formal negotiations begin, the first of the six points of our proposal in Geneva is clear. Formal negotiations can begin with the acceptance of our equality, on the basis of sovereign equality and equal international status. “Before that, it does not make sense to start negotiations or discuss important issues,” he said.

At the same time, he said he was open and ready for a second informal meeting on the Cyprus issue in Geneva or elsewhere. In Geneva, he continued, no common ground was found so that formal negotiations could begin. But Tatar said he was pleased with the UN Secretary-General's report, which he said would not end the effort and would see to it that he could square the circle.

“Even if the Secretary-General understands his position,” said Ersin Tatar, “there are UN parameters that refer to a federation and create some difficulties.” That is why he will try, the T / C leader continued, “to show maybe how the circle can be squared. This struggle, the effort, will continue in this direction “.

He reiterated that the Greek Cypriots expelled the Turkish Cypriots from the Republic of Cyprus, criticized the unilateral accession of the Greek Cypriots to the EU and said that Turkey is both a guarantor country and a “motherland”, but also the most powerful country in the region. just 40 miles away from Cyprus. His vision, he continued, is supported by Turkey and this is very important.

He also reiterated that he submitted new ideas to the Cyprus issue, as requested by the UN Secretary General in his letter of January 21, 2021.

Mr. Tatar claimed that peace came to Cyprus in 1974 and since then no blood has been shed. “The years are passing and our state is taking root,” he said, referring to the pseudo-state, whose status in the region is being upgraded with the support of Turkey.

Now, he continued, with regard to energy reserves and strategic developments in the region, it is more natural for agreements to be made “from state to state” in order to achieve stability.

The Turkish Cypriots, Mr. Tatar said, will not accept a required agreement. He claimed that the Greek Cypriots were playing a game that he had understood and referred to President Anastasiadis's speech at the unveiling of a monument in Ayia Napa (for the battle of 1826 in Cyprus) that in 1821 when the Greek revolution against the Ottomans began, that day in Cyprus began the vision for Union with Greece.

Answering a question, he said that he welcomes the holding of this meeting with the Secretary General, while regarding the EU stance, he stated that the EU High Representative, Josep Borrell, was there at the Antalya Diplomatic Forum “and avoided meeting with me. We saw this with regret. In my opinion, it is a great injustice. “

Hoping for a positive result from the European Council and pointing out that Turkey is a country of 85 million, the EU has a population of 450 million and the Republic of Cyprus 800,000 at most, Ersin Tatar asked what logic President Anastasiadis says he will put veto. “It simply came to our notice then. The EU has introduced many problems (with the accession of Cyprus). “This is what many European officials admit when they meet with us.” He referred to statements recently made by former British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw that “Cyprus' accession to the EU with the Cyprus issue unresolved was wrong.”

He may, he continued, not have an agreement in Cyprus as he wants, the opposition may criticize him, but everyone sees that his struggle is reflected in the international press. “If there is a problem in Cyprus, it does not come from the Turkish Cypriots. Because the Turkish Cypriots are waging a struggle for domination. “There are two peoples here.”

Reiterating that Turkey supports them and is the strongest country in the region, the Turkish leader said that “the balance must be restored on the basis of equality. We can only make a deal if it is sustainable and not dangerous. Otherwise, an agreement will be reached and in a few years there will be controversy. We will not allow such a thing. “

We strengthen our position by explaining the facts, the current situation in Cyprus, concluded Mr. Tatar.
