Tatar wants a “two-state” dialogue

At a time when attention in Nicosia is focused on a number of internal issues, Ersin Tatar took the opportunity to project his positions and demands in different directions. View positions that have to do with the upcoming discussion in the Security Council on the developments in Cyprus (talks and UNIKFYP).

What Ersin Tatar says from the occupied territories is that without his terms being accepted, there is no question of returning to the negotiations. To sit at the negotiating table again requires acceptance of sovereign equality and equal representation. It also requires a dialogue between “two states”.

The Turkish Cypriot side is constantly moving in the logic of contacts between two states. This is what he sought through the recent telephone communication that Ersin Tatar had with President Anastasiadis on the occasion of the earthquake that occurred in the northwest of Cyprus.

In statements during his participation in a TVNET TV program (source GTP), Tatar claimed that the Turkish Cypriot side does not avoid dialogue with the Greek Cypriot side. He stated that they are always ready to enter into informal talks with the Greek Cypriot side to discuss the mutual accusations between them but also issues related to the environment and energy. “We can not resume formal talks until our sovereign equality and equal representation are first accepted,” said Ersin Tatar.

According to the Turkish Cypriot leader, “the Greek Cypriot side does not want an agreement on the basis of equality.” Continuing what Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in his meeting with European ambassadors, Tatar accused the EU of failing to deliver on its promises to Turkish Cypriots in 2004.

According to Güneş (a source close to the incident), Ersin Tatar issued a written statement expressing his satisfaction with Erdo .an's statements. Welcoming Erdogan's statements, Tatar, in a written statement, again blamed the Greek Cypriot side for the failure of the talks, because it has not got rid of the mentality, which considers itself the sole owner of the island and ignores the Turkish Cypriots. .

Noting that they will continue to promote their new policy, which provides for the cooperation of two equal sovereign states, in full unity with Turkey in thoughts and actions, Tatar claimed that “the Turkish Cypriot people will continue to protect with the support of Turkey the its legal rights and interests in the region “.

What seems to have pleased Ersin Tatar the most is the US intervention in the Eastern Mediterranean pipeline. Washington's stance, which essentially shows the withdrawal of any support for the project, is interpreted in both the Occupied Territories and Ankara as a success of Turkish policy and a parallel failure of Nicosia's actions.

Evaluating the withdrawal of US support for the construction of the gas pipeline, Tatar said: “It was clear from the beginning that this project was not possible. It was a political move. We are not condemned to an agreement in Cyprus against Turkey. “They tried to create the impression that they could transport this LPG, this oil, this wealth to Europe.”

Tatar then pointed out the right route for the gas pipeline from the Eastern Mediterranean to Europe, saying: “What is important, if one day this wealth is promoted in the market, it is better to transfer it directly from Cyprus to Turkey, which is only 40 miles away and from there to the European Union with Turkey's existing gas pipelines. It is the most practical and feasible solution. So it will be, there is no other way. That fact must be taken into account. “

Finally, Tatar argued that his positions should be accepted in order to strike the right balance in the Eastern Mediterranean.
