TEPAK: Investment in the “triangle of knowledge” focusing on man

The Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK) is today a modern and pioneering public university compared to the world's leading universities, a fact that is confirmed by its high positions in the most important, world-renowned, university ranking lists, such as the Times Higher Education. and Shanghai. In order to develop the field of research and innovation in Cyprus and to provide specialized services to social and productive bodies of our country, a number of important research centers of excellence and laboratories operate at TEPAK, which are the main axis of production of innovative theoretical and applied research aimed at enhancing and utilizing scientific knowledge. The thematic areas in which TEPAK develops significant research activity and has competitive know-how include, among others, fields such as robotics and computational intelligence, telemedicine, virtual reality and computer graphics, environmental biochemistry and biotechnology, food technology, materials and fluid engineering, geoinformatics and satellite remote sensing, nanotechnology, epidemiology and speech rehabilitation.

One of these research laboratories is the Automatic Control Robotics and Decision Systems (RCDS Lab) laboratory of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering. This laboratory is the first robotics laboratory in Cyprus, which has been recognized by the EU as a Digital Innovation Hub (DIH). The laboratory has to date developed externally funded activities worth over 26 million euros, while participating in research, technology development, innovation and commercialization activities that use air, ground, marine, and underground robots and related technologies. RCDS staff has decades of combined experience in robotics, technology, product development and entrepreneurship in the US, Europe and Asia. The laboratory has collaborated with commercial organizations of all sizes (startups up to multinationals) as well as with academic and government agencies and NGOs.

Some of the examples of the laboratory project, with direct application to the economy and society, are the design and development of robots for autonomous inspection and maintenance of ships, the development of software for the real-time, optimal management of intra-factory robotic supply chain, as well as business support in the development of robotic systems for the cleaning of photovoltaic panels and the topographic recording and inspection of highways.

The teaching and research staff of the University Departments develop a rich research activity, mainly by publishing scientific articles in prestigious international scientific journals, by organizing scientific events and conferences and by participating in research programs and projects. The following are just a few examples of the important work being done by the University Departments.

The Departments of Civil Engineering and Geoinformatics and Mechanical Engineering and Science and Materials Engineering participate, among other Departments of the University, in a number of research and development projects of IDEK, coordinated by the start-up AMDM Ltd, which produces composite materials and nano-materials high tech. The role of TEPAK is in the experimental control for the design of new materials and the understanding of their behavior and durability.

The Department of Agricultural Sciences, Biotechnology and Food Science promotes education and research in sustainable food production through innovative production systems and integrated food systems management methods that ensure the quality of products produced, their safety and contribute to food stability. Innovative research and results are produced in the fields of primary production, processing and in many sub-sectors such as biodiversity conservation, food authentication certification, safety control and utilization of bioactivity of many natural products, which are integrated in the educational process. . Finally, innovation is developed through research into new learning technologies in the fields of agricultural science and food science as well as through innovative training approaches in innovation and entrepreneurship using the approaches of preincubation and reverse incubation.

Moreover, TEPAK, innovating once again and listening to the need of the state and society to address the problem of financial illiteracy and the promotion of financial education in Cyprus, has introduced and will offer from the next semester the course entitled “Personnel Management Resources “.

The University is also a pioneer in the field of sustainability and sustainable development, promoting and implementing environmentally friendly policies and practices, while through its daily operation it produces work related to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, with the ultimate goal of establishing itself as a green University that invests in people, the environment, quality of life and sustainable development.

It also coordinates the Cyprus Climate Innovation Hub, which is part of the EU's largest initiative for action against climate change, EIT Climate-KIC. In this context, the university participates in the organization of educational programs in Gymnasiums – Lyceums, but also postgraduate students in order to help them develop skills of systems innovation (systems innovation) and green entrepreneurship.

The University, as the natural ally of the state and society, assists, with the infrastructure and the renowned and high-level academic and research staff, for the fastest and as smooth as possible transition of the Cypriot economy and society to the new digital era and the new conditions formed on the basis of the “4th industrial revolution”. TEPAK recently became the first public organization in Cyprus to fully implement e-signature, a fact that is an important step both for the implementation of e-Government at our University and for the digital transformation of companies and organizations in Cyprus, making it a model of public organization that successfully implements digital developments.

At the same time, TEPAK remains a human-centered University, with sensitivities in the issues of inclusion, acceptance of diversity and gender equality. To this end, it has established a Code of Practice for the Prevention and Treatment of Sexual Harassment and Harassment in the university community and has developed a Gender Equality Plan.

The University will continue, with the same consistency and dedication, to carry out the work and mission entrusted to it by the state, investing in the development of scientific education, applied research and innovation, always focused on the human being and contributing to its improvement. living standards of citizens and the transformation of Cyprus into a regional hub of technology and innovation.
