Standard Academic Institution in the Production and Utilization of Renewable Energy Sources
The Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK), as a modern and pioneering public university that promotes excellence in the fields of education, research and innovation, has evolved, in its few years of operation, into a “green” University and a model academic institution in the production and utilization of green energy, with the help of technology and renewable energy sources, which does not leave a significant imprint on the environment.
TEPAK undertakes initiatives and actions to raise awareness of the university community and society at large around environmental issues, implementing & nbsp; environmentally friendly policies and setting as its strategic goal the sustainable development and the integration of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in its pillars.
For its rich activity as a “green” University, it has repeatedly received & nbsp; awards and distinctions, proof of a culture with a strong element of environmental responsibility. From its foundation until today, the University designs and implements an integrated environmental policy, which is a constant guide and compass for all actions and energies undertaken by the University.
The University, realizing the modern requirements in in relation to energy needs, waste management and in general the promotion of sustainable development, has taken care to create a team with the aim of designing and implementing its environmental policy.
Since 2010, the Office of Environmental Policy has been established and operates under the sole responsibility of & nbsp; the environmental management of the University's issues. The purpose of this office is to reduce the environmental impact of the University, the implementation of new ways of environmental management, the integration of environmental valves in every action and process of the University, the awareness of the University community and the emergence of the University as a pioneer. sustainable development. The Office also proposes solutions for recycling, energy saving, alternative waste management and energy production.
To further develop its Sustainability, the University has created two hybrid teams of Academics and Administrators to the involvement of research in the processes of the University and not only.
& nbsp; Erection of energy efficient buildings
Within the framework of sustainable development and the specific goal of increasing & nbsp; of the contribution of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) to the energy balance, the University designs and builds buildings to meet its housing needs, with environmental standards and applying alternative energy sources, with the aim of & nbsp; very high energy efficiency and almost zero energy consumption.
The building of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering of TEPAK became the first public building in Cyprus with Solar Cooling/Heating System. The deterioration of climatic conditions from the reckless use of energy, combined with the increase in primary energy demand has created the need for better energy planning, making energy management an integral part of the overall administration of the University.
The University designed and will erect in 2022 the first public building Almost Zero Energy Consumption (KSMKE), which even managed to win an award. This is the new Laboratory building of the Department of Fine Arts, which is an environmentally friendly building with minimal needs for mechanical heating and cooling and artificial lighting. The purpose is to create a building with almost zero energy consumption, which will be largely covered by photovoltaics. The building was designed based on the principles of bioclimatic architecture.
Design of green public procurement – & nbsp; Emphasis on energy saving
TEPAK also has autonomy in the design of green public contracts with the inclusion of environmental parameters, something for which it has been awarded several times by the Department of Environment of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment. procures products, services or works using green criteria when evaluating bids.
The university places special emphasis on energy savings but also on waste reduction, reuse and recycling. & Nbsp; There are several triple recycling bins for plastic, paper and conventional rubbish indoors and outdoors. There are also two Green Points for recycling materials and items. TEPAK gives exceptional importance to the management of biological and hazardous waste resulting from the various laboratory processes. Through various actions it tries to cultivate the environmental awareness and culture among the members of the university community with the aim of saving energy and protecting the environment.
Laboratory of Environmental Engineering: Sustainable processes for converting carbon dioxide into products and energy.
TEPAK has demonstrated a significant track record in environmental research projects that seek to provide smart and nature-based solutions, while it has laboratories that conduct research in the fields of sustainability and the environment, such as the Laboratory of Environmental Engineering of the Department of Chemical Engineering, headed by Assistant Professor Giannis Vyridis.
The Laboratory studies sustainable & nbsp; for the environment processes for converting carbon dioxide into products or methane which can be used for energy production. & nbsp; Research is being done on the use of anaerobic microorganisms, such as methanogens, which can convert carbon dioxide and hydrogen to methane. The microbial reaction to convert carbon dioxide and hydrogen to volatile acids is also studied using anaerobic autotrophic oxygenated microorganisms. & Nbsp;
The above microbial reactions in addition to the use of carbon dioxide require the presence of hydrogen to carry out the reaction. For this reason, the coupling of electrolysis of water for hydrogen production with the processes of anaerobic microorganisms is studied. In addition to the use of hydrogen, recent research has shown that the aforementioned microorganisms can perform the above reactions by directly taking & nbsp; electrons and carbon dioxide.
Based on the above, it is possible to use renewable energy sources to convert carbon dioxide into products or energy. Also, these electromicrobiological processes & nbsp; can be & nbsp; solution for storing renewable energy sources in methane or volatile acids. An alternative way of producing hydrogen, which is being studied in the laboratory, is the anaerobic decomposition of water using iron or magnesium of zero strength. These reactions are studied independently for hydrogen production but also in conjunction with anaerobic autotrophic microorganisms. The Laboratory of Environmental Engineering participates in European research projects of IDEK, Horizon 2020 and INTERREG Balkan-Mediterranean.
TEPAK will continue to apply good and sustainable practices
The University, as a sensitive and responsible organization that invests in people, the environment, quality of life, health and sustainable development, will continue to apply good and sustainable practices, remaining faithful to the principles of sustainable development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals contributing substantially to the wider society and economic development of the country.
