The 15-year history of the European elections in Cyprus - The messages of the people

On April 24, 2004, the Greek Cypriots said a resounding “no” to the United Nations plan for the solution of the Cyprus problem (Annan Plan), as the then President of the Republic of Cyprus, Tassos Papadopoulos, and then leading Democratic officials asked with sullen eyes. Alarm – Dimitris Syllouris, Prodromos Prodromou, Rikos Erotokritou etc. – Vassos Lyssaridis and Giannakis Omirou (EDEK), George Perdikis (and the Ecologists), George Lillikas (then AKEL and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) led by the then Metropolitan of Paphos and now Archbishop of Cyprus, Chrysostomos II) and other political-religious-economic factors of the place, giving the world a European solution, arguing that in a few days Cyprus would be a member of the European Union (EU). AKEL asked for a soft “no” in order to cement the 'yes' “. The Republic of Cyprus joined the EU on May 1, 2004. The Democratic Alarm of 34% was hurt by the “yes” of Clerides – Anastasiadis in the United Nations plan, after other leaders fought within the party for the opposite view. In the referendum, the Greek Cypriots voted 75.83% against the Annan Plan and 24.17% in favor, and the Turkish Cypriots 64.91% in favor and 53.09% against.

2004
In the first European elections in Cyprus (June 13, 2004), about a month and a half after the “no”, the received Democratic Alarm led by Nikos Anastasiadis achieved the impossible – came the first party with AKEL remaining second, losing the lead of the 2001 MPs , while the party of the winner of the referendum, President Papadopoulos, came third – it lost voters. A significant percentage of the voters of the Left party chose to abstain, punishing their party for its stance in the referendum. The then secretary general was angry. of AKEL and President of the House of Representatives, Dimitris Christofias, justified the fall of AKEL percentages by linking the result with the good weather (“they chose the beaches”)…

DISY is the first

The abstention in the first European elections in Cyprus was small in relation to the percentages of the European elections of 2009 and 2014. There is a large drop of the percentages of AKEL in relation to the parliamentary elections of 2001. Specifically, the results of the European elections of 2004 were as follows (in parentheses the percentages of the deputies of 2001): DISY (N. Anastasiadis) 28.23% / 94,355 votes [34.00% / 139,732], AKEL (D. Christofias) 27.89% / 93,212 [34.71 % / 142,647], DIKO (T. Papadopoulos) 17.09% / 57,121 [14.00% / 60,977], For Europe (G. Matsis) 10.08% / 36,112, EDEK (G. Homerou) 10.79 % / 36.075 [6.51% / 26.770], United Democrats (G. Vassiliou) 1.95% / 6.534 [2.59% / 10.640], NEW (N. Koutsou) 1.65% / 5.501 [3.00 % / 12.334], Movement of Ecologists (G. Perdikis) 0.86% / 2.872 [1.98% / 8.128]. Voted 72.50% / 350,387 votes [91.75% / 428,990], abstention 27.50% / 132,294 [8.25% / 38,553]. Ioannis Kasoulidis (67.251, DISY / ELK), Panagiotis Dimitriou (24.589, DISY / ELK), Adamos Adamou (30.290, AKEL / Eur. Left), Kyriakos Triantaphyllidis (27.766) were elected MEPs. 27,371, DIKO / Alliance of Phil. & Dim.), Giannakis Matsis (24,839, For Europe / EPP).

2009
The 2009 European elections in Cyprus were held on June 6, and the winner of the elections was the abstention and bathing of the people, in a country that has traditionally had a large turnout in the electoral process. The two major parties – and their leaders, Anastasiadis – Kyprianou, supporters of the ICC – emerged stronger from the 2009 European elections and basically the then President of the Republic of Cyprus, Dimitris Christofias, received popular approval to continue efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem. the then leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, Mehmet Ali Talat. In DIKO – Tassos Papadopoulos had lost the Presidential elections of 2008 by Dimitris Christofias – the internal party confrontation between Papadopoulos and Karogianis for the control of the party was clearly visible, while a third group, the so-called Kyprianians led by his son Kypros , kept balances, counted beans, weighed forces of the other two tendencies, aiming at the presidency of the Democratic Party… and the state.

2014

The third European elections in Cyprus, held on May 25, 2014, were the first electoral process after the cut in deposits, the closure of the People's Bank, the troika and the memorandum, the unprecedented for the Cypriot data unemployment rates, the reduction of earnings of the workers, the scandal of Dromolaxia (Cyta) and the imprisonment of a senior executive of AKEL (financial manager of the party). The abstention triumphed, a political stance that was interpreted as the disapproval of the people throughout the party system. The Democratic Alarm, after the election of Nikos Anastasiadis as President of the Republic (February 2013), was taken over by Averof Neophytou, while the Democratic Party had huge internal party problems after the change of its leadership. In December 2013, DIKO passed into the hands of Tassos Papadopoulos's son, Nikola, who won the internal party elections for 546 votes against the then president of the party Marios Karoyan (NP 51.12% / 12.460, MK 48.88% / 11,914).
