The 2022 archaeological survey at the Kissonerga-Scalia site, under the direction of Dr. Lindy Crewe, Director of the American Archaeological Research Institute in Nicosia (CAARI), has been completed, according to an announcement by the Department of Antiquities of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works.

This archaeological site preserves remains from a chronologically wide spectrum of the Bronze Age as well as evidence of habitation during the Chalcolithic period, before 2,500 BC.

< p>As mentioned, the site seems to be connected to the neighboring settlement of Kissonerga-Mosfilia of the Neolithic period-Filias Phase. The settlement at Kissonerga-Scalia was abandoned around 1600 BC, a period of transition to the Late Bronze Age.

Additionally, the announcement continues, the  research in the area has revealed that the settlement at the Kissonerga-Scalia site was founded at the beginning of the Filia phase of the Bronze Age, around 2500 BC. and flourished until the end of the Middle Bronze Age, around 1750 BC.

During this period, the older residential buildings were abandoned and a large-scale building program took place, which included the demolition of  of previous constructions and the construction of a building complex occupying an area of 1200m2.

The building complex included a series of open and covered spaces consisting of large walls up to 1.2 m wide in various directions and a floor of well pressed clay or plaster.

During the 2022 excavation period, the remains of the complex were further uncovered in order to identify clues about the use of the site. At least two building phases can be distinguished, while it is clear that the complex began to decline, with the various activities decreasing, some areas probably being slowly abandoned and others being violently destroyed.

It is also mentioned that the Kissonerga site -Scalia is a good example of a phenomenon that occurs during the transition to the Late Bronze Age, when people began to build large buildings and produce products on a larger scale at a time when maritime trade was flourishing in the Mediterranean.

Since the complex was abandoned early and the remains have not been destroyed as a result of later human activity, we are able to study this phenomenon in detail, the announcement concludes.
