The Limassol Criminal Court finds the behavior of a 52-year-old man, who was found guilty today in five charges, with the most serious homicide, in relation to the accident that occurred in the early hours of November 28, 2019, on the Nicosia-Limassol highway, where he died. Panagiotis Christoforou.

In his decision, as announced by the court, he states that the then 50-year-old defendant, was transported by other persons to his home, on the night of November 27, 2019, after he had consumed a large amount of alcohol and could not drive. A little later and while he was in the same situation, he drove another car, first on Amathountas Avenue – where he violated a red traffic light – and then on the Nicosia – Limassol highway, in the direction of Limassol.

A driver who noticed the 50-year-old's vehicle moving in a zigzag pattern, the traffic lights flashed to indicate the danger of his driving, however he developed a speed of over 140 km / h.

His vehicle collided with the vehicle of the unfortunate 27-year-old, with a speed of around 180 kilometers, while as it was ascertained, the accused did not take any measures, since no traces of braking or sliding were found.

As a consequence of the accident, it is added, Panagiotis Christoforou, father of a five-year-old child, lost his life.

Upon examination, it was found that the accused, in addition to being under the influence of alcohol, had in his blood a quantity of substances that act as additives to alcohol, in terms of its suppressive action, while it is noted that both alcohol and diazepam were taken voluntarily. from him.

The court ruled that the conduct of the accused was “criminally infernal” and that it fell within the provisions of Article 205 of the Penal Code, as it showed “gross negligence, equivalent to culpable negligence, as required by the provisions in question”. .

The accused, it is added, showed complete arrogance and indifference to the traffic and in particular to the victim and was completely indifferent to the objective, substantial or real potential dangers posed by his entire road behavior, ie the risk of causing death or at least serious injury. .

The court notes that the entire behavior of the accused is expressed in the most brilliant way by the ancient phrase “earth fire mix” (the expression let soil and fire be mixed, which indicates complete indifference to any developments).

Relatives of the unfortunate Panagiotis were once again in court, wearing T-shirts with his photo.

The sentence of the 52-year-old is expected to be announced on July 12.
