The dynamic agricultural mobilizations on a pan-European level are not lightning bolts. It is the natural consequence of the policies of the European Union which unilaterally burden the costs of the green transition on the agricultural world and have brought it to the brink of destruction.

According to a statement by Giannakis Gavriil, AKEL Member of Parliament and Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture, within the framework of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture we had in time expressed strong concerns that the new Common Agricultural Policy as it is being promoted distributes unaffordable costs in the primary sector and will threaten its viability.

To the problems caused by the new CAP in the agricultural world, the huge increases in the cost of production have been added in recent years, which have literally brought farmers to their knees.

The cost for oil, electricity, fertilizers, pesticides has skyrocketed while farmers are being exploited by middlemen and oligopolies receiving degrading prices for their products.

Already from the media of 2021, at the level of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture we constantly and imperatively put to the government the need to take horizontal measures to reduce production costs.

Unfortunately, despite the verbal recognition, both by the current and previous governments, of the suffocating problems of the rural world, the measures taken so far are piecemeal and do not solve the problems.

We will bring the issue back before the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture, expecting substantial measures to support the primary sector from the government.
