In Cape Verde, there were Researchers of the Center of Excellence for Climate and Atmospheric Research (CARE-C) of the Cyprus Institute, within the framework of the ASKOS campaign. The aim of the campaign, coordinated by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), with funding from the European Space Agency (ESA), is to confirm and characterize the measurements of the Aeolus satellite.
The Aeolus satellite mission is the first to make space-based measurements of vertical wind profiles on a global scale, which are used to improve weather forecasts and climate models. The ASKOS campaign used advanced ground-based remote sensing techniques and ground-based instruments to provide observations of aerosols, clouds, water vapor and wind to calibrate and validate the corresponding Aeolus satellite products.
CARE-C teams, including scientists from the Research Infrastructure for Atmospheric Research (CAO) and the Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL), were in Cape Verde for the ASKOS campaign from 10 to 30 June 2022, after preparation of about a year. During the campaign, USRL drones were flown, equipped with atmospheric sensors that measure the size distribution and orientation of particles and can collect dust samples for further analysis. The aircraft measurements are used in conjunction with measurements from the ground instruments of the international scientific teams involved in the campaign to calibrate and validate the Aeolous satellite.
The campaign is coordinated by NOA, with the participation of 22 scientific organizations and networks from 12 countries in Europe and America. The CARE-C Center of Excellence of the Cyprus Institute is the only Cypriot research organization that participated in this mission of the international ASKOS campaign, with partners such as the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) in Germany, the National Research Council of Spain (CSIC) , the Meteorological Institute of Finland, and the Copernicus Atmospheric Observatory (ECMWF/CAMS). The campaign was carried out with the local support of the Ocean Science Center Mindelo (OSCM), and the Cesária Évora International Airport in Cape Verde.
Cape Verde is an island country, approximately 570 kilometers off the coast of West Africa. . Because of strong winds that often carry desert dust and smoke from continental fires to the islands of the region, it becomes an important site for investigations of aerosol-cloud interaction and atmospheric dynamics. Actions to validate and calibrate the Aeolus products are particularly important in tropical regions, such as Cape Verde, as they are expected to have a very high impact on weather simulation models, and a better understanding of related processes.
