The chronicle of the harassment of the local farmer in Denia – Video document

Must read

Το χρονικτη ς παρενoχλησης του Ε/κ γεωργοσ τη ΔΕνεια – ΒΕντεο ντοκουμΕντο

The video captures the moment when – for the second time – three Turkish soldiers, including an officer, and two pseudo-policemen, attempt to intimidate the E/K farmer, who was plowing his land, at noon.

The scenes from the second incident were recorded by SIGMA with journalist Giorgos Tattis and cameraman Marios Kyriakou, with the obvious absence of the United Nations.

The noontime chronicle

For about an hour, Turkish soldiers roamed the area and hid in nearby bushes. Meanwhile, in the adjacent Turkish outpost that was set up illegally in the last few days, there was intense movement.

Soldiers, they came and went as’ throughout the ploughing. A few minutes later, a military vehicle passed by, a few meters above.

«At this moment, the E/K farmer, accompanied by other villagers, is plowing his field. A little further, at the Turkish outpost, Turkish soldiers are lined up.

The two cars accompanying the farmer left. But another Greek Cypriot came and stayed close to the area.  Next, Sigma's crew came closer.

“As you can see, the absence of UNFICYP is deafening.” the occupying army, to approach the farmer.

"At this moment, there is movement above the tractor, by Turkish soldiers", while, the community leader of Denia, talks by phone throughout the plowing , with the Greek Cypriot farmer.

The farmer's conversation with the Turks lasted around 15 minutes. According to testimonies, the Turks asked the farmer not to cross the border line from his property, stating that they had been informed by UNFICYP that this was the border of the dead zone.

However, the farmer he has been cultivating the estate in question for several years, which belongs to his family.

As can be seen, the occupying regime, in an informal agreement with the Peacekeeping force, is attempting to advance several meters towards the dead zone, reaching as far as the ancient church of Agios Perniakos.

As we were leaving, a patrol car appeared of UNFICYP, about a kilometer away from the incident, which had however been completed. We asked for an explanation from UNFICYP officers, without receiving a convincing answer. They reported that they did not see a peacekeeping helicopter and that they "are patrolling the entire dead zone".

Incident of intimidation&hellip? and in the morning

In the morning, almost thirty soldiers, with two land rovers and a civilian agricultural vehicle, tried to stop the farmer, who was cultivating an adjacent field, a little closer to the Turkish outpost.

Eyewitness the priest of the community, which was located in an ancient small church, Agios Perniakos, just next door.

Speaking to Sigma, the priest reported that in a conversation with a UNFICYP officer, commenting that if the occupying troops are allowed to advance they will enter the village, the Argentine officer replied: "Sure".

As we are informed , the UN forces they were already at the scene and demanded that the farmer leave, as they knew that Turkish soldiers would come.

With the arrival of the farmer, the peacekeepers wanted to stop him, while the Turkish soldiers demonstratively motioned for him to do not proceed further. The farmer, after finishing his work, left.

UNFICYP is lying

The UN is lying shamelessly, as after the incidents, they issued a statement, stating that their presence prevented the worst.  "UNFICYP was present and therefore, further tensions were avoided". However, the Sigma report proves something completely different

They added that "the farmer was working without authorization inside the UN dead zone and north of the cease-fire line, despite being warned several times that must retreat».

So questions arise, if the U.N. they acted with a vengeance the second time and did not go to the scene. Also, in the statement they seem to be blurring the point, wanting to gloss over the fact that the incident was within the dead zone. One they say was inside the dead zone and the other north of the ceasefire line. Additionally, farmers who have been active in the area for years are already authorized, especially when the plots in question have been cultivated for years.

And secondly, based on the conversations we were present at: UNFICYP was saying something completely different . They claimed, in fact, that the new outpost existed in the past. However, the abandoned outpost is a few hundred meters further back.

At the same time, work on the former Cetinkaya stadium continues unabated, ignoring the Cypriot government's calls for a halt.
