The European Union's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) plays a key role in strengthening agriculture for its member states, and Cyprus is no exception. With the launch of the new CAP Strategic Plan 2023-2027, the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment has set high goals for the country's primary sector and declares itself ready to implement them. The total amount to be invested is quite large, as it amounts to €454,855,295, of which €373,748,535 is a European contribution. A decisive factor for its success is its vision and philosophical approach.
The CAP Strategic Plan 2023-2027 is designed with a people-centered philosophy, seeking to contribute to a primary sector that meets the needs of both producers and consumers. Through individual interventions, the Plan aspires to promote the harmonious coexistence of man and the environment, focusing on sustainability and the protection of natural resources for future generations.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, which acts as the Administrative Authority, constantly monitors the implementation of the interventions, ensuring the efficient and effective implementation of the Plan. The Cyprus Agricultural Payments Organization (COAP) has been designated as the Paying Authority, responsible for the management and control of the Scheme's expenditure, as well as for the payment of payments to the beneficiaries.
One of the main points of the Strategic Plan is to strengthen the relationship between the farmer and the consumer. The Ministry aims, specifically, to create structures that will facilitate direct communication and understanding between the two parties for mutual respect and recognition of the efforts of farmers. An approach that strengthens local production and promotes the consumption of Cypriot products, thereby contributing to the development of the local economy.
At the same time, the Strategic Plan aims to promote practices that respect the environment and the health of consumers. By supporting farming methods that reduce the use of chemicals and antibiotics, the production of safe and healthy food is ensured. In addition, new technologies play a key role in enhancing the competitiveness of Cypriot farmers in the globalized market, offering consumers quality food at reasonable prices.
The European Union's CAP is evolving continuously over the years, responding to changing fiscal and economic conditions. Once again it demonstrates its commitment to strengthening the agricultural sector and ensuring a sustainable and competitive future for Cyprus' farmers and consumers.
