The Communist Initiative of Cyprus is opposed to the goal of joining NATO
The Communist Initiative of Cyprus, in a statement, expresses its opposition to the possible accession of Cyprus to NATO, following the statements of the President of the Republic regarding the goal of Cyprus joining the organization.
As it states in a statement, the Government is putting the people of Cyprus in the eye of the storm, while adding that this development is not a bolt from the blue, but is the result of the strategic choices of the Cypriot bourgeoisie and all governments.
“It comes to tread on the fact that the British NATO bases have become a staging ground for imperialist wars in the region. Foreign services and troops are roaming the airports, ports and military installations undisturbed. The culmination of all this was the inauguration of the Cyprus-US strategic dialogue last October, part of which was the acquisition by the US of its own military installations within the Larnaca Military Complex and the Base in Mari”, it states.
The Communist Initiative states that NATO bears grave responsibility for the twin crimes in Cyprus and that a NATO member country occupies 37% of the country's territory.
It maintains that NATO is not a pillar of stability nor does it ensure the security of the people of Cyprus, but on the contrary, it is drawing the country deeper into imperialist antagonisms and making the people a target of reprisals.
