The President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulidis at the EDEK event
“History has proven that the policy of appeasement and providing incentives in Turkey has failed”
It seems that the rift between the Government and EDEK began to grow as the disagreement between the two on issues concerning the Cyprus issue was obvious.
At the moment when the Government agreed to the participation of the Turkish Foreign Minister in the Informal Meeting of EU Foreign Ministers, EDEK continues to proclaim that history has proven that the policy of appeasement and providing incentives to Turkey has failed.
The social democratic party in its announcement today states that the many and dangerous concessions that have been made on our part in the Cyprus issue, for almost fifty years, in the context of a demonstration of goodwill, have not brought any results. p>
On the contrary, he notes, Turkey is becoming more defiant, becoming more defiant and unfortunately every time our side retreats, the Turkish side wins and satisfies its unacceptable demands.
This wrong strategy, as he emphasizes, should not be applied at the level of the European Union and Euro-Turkish relations.
“In order for the status of the Republic of Cyprus as a member state of the European Union , where the consent of the Republic of Cyprus is required for decisions concerning European Union-Turkey relations, the following must be set as necessary conditions from our side:
- Recognition of the Republic of Cyprus by Turkey
- Implementation of Turkey's Cypriot obligations at the level of the European Union
- Removal of the Turkish veto on the participation of the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Cyprus in joint EU-NATO activities ».
