The following are & nbsp; statements on the subject by government spokesman Mario Pelican:
The President of the Republic is in Brussels to attend, today and tomorrow, the European Council Summit.
As The situation in Ukraine will be at the center of the talks, in the initial part of which will be attended by the American President, Mr. Joe Biden.
EU leaders will exchange views on various aspects of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, including ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the war, growing refugee flows and the reception of Ukrainian refugees in the EU, humanitarian and economic we need Ukraine and to fill the gaps that are observed in relation to the implementation of the sanctions that we have already imposed. And unfortunately, the biggest gaps in terms of sanctions concern third countries and especially countries that are candidates for EU membership, with Turkey predominating.
In the context of the whole discussion, President Anastasiadis will draw some parallels between the current & nbsp; situation in Ukraine and what happened in Cyprus in 1974. And it will explain the reasons why the passage of time does not produce justice, nor does it wash away the invasion and occupation of a country by a larger neighbor and their derivatives . The President of the Republic will brief its European counterparts on the bold Confidence-Building Measures it has proposed, aimed at restoring trust between the parties and creating the conditions for them to resume negotiations on resolving the Cyprus issue. >
The most important item on the agenda of the second day of the European Council's work is Energy, in the light of the European Union 's energy recovery efforts, as an urgent need in the new geopolitical situation in Europe, through the diversification of & nbsp; sources & nbsp; its energy supply. President Anastasiadis will highlight the important role that the Republic of Cyprus can play in this direction, through important energy projects and synergies with partners in the wider region and neighboring countries. In addition, they will exchange views on the key issue of high energy prices, as recorded in recent months, and consider specific measures that could alleviate the unbearable costs incurred by citizens and businesses. & nbsp;
Regarding the other issues of the Summit, I would say that the points concerning (1) the field of Defense and Security stand out, especially if one takes into account the agreement reached on the Strategic Compass (2) the food situation within the Single Market, (3) the latest developments in relation to the coronavirus pandemic and (4) preparations for the forthcoming EU-China Summit.
