Following a request for assistance from Cyprus through the EU's Civil Protection Mechanism, Greece sent two firefighting aircraft to help fight the fires that broke out in the Paphos area.

Specifically Greece sent two Canadair CL-415, to help with the fires that hit the Paphos area, by order of the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilia.

This was the first use of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, during the season of high risk for forest fires.

In total, as part of preparedness measures for the high-risk season for forest fires, the EU has created a fleet of 32 aerial firefighting vehicles and 556 firefighters, pre-deployed across Europe. >

In addition, the EU is currently supporting 8 forest fire prevention projects, strengthening national forest fire resilience capacities.

In his remarks, Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, said he thanks Greece for its quick response to help Cyprus fight fires in the Paphos area by deploying two firefighting aircraft. “This is EU solidarity in action”.

The EU Emergency Response Coordination Center is closely monitoring the situation and stands ready to provide additional assistance upon request, according to a statement.
