The extraordinary cabinet meeting in London was completed without announcements for new measures

The emergency cabinet meeting convened this afternoon in Downing Street by Boris Johnson ended without announcements of further restrictive measures against the Omicron variant.

According to political sources, the ministers were briefed on the alarming epidemiological situation by scientific advisers, but in the end it was not scheduled as many expected a press conference to announce new measures.

Mr Johnson, on the other hand, made the statement shortly after the long meeting. As he said, the ministers agreed that the situation is “extremely difficult”, with balanced arguments for and against the additional measures.

He noted that Omicron's cases are on the rise and hospitalizations are rising sharply in London.

But he concluded that the government will continue to monitor the data and reserves the right to take further measures to protect the public and the NHS. “We will not hesitate to take action. “The situation could not have been more urgent,” Johnson said, adding that no measures could be ruled out.

He also noted that citizens have begun to pay more attention and expressed his solution to the blow that sectors of the economy are already receiving from Omicron.

The assessment is that the prospect of immediate restrictions, before Christmas, is met with a very strong reaction from a significant portion of ministers, in addition to the dozens of Conservative MPs who have made their opposition clear.

Therefore, according to the Times and the Sun, among others, Prime Minister Johnson is said to be oriented towards the imposition of measures after the Christmas weekend, when he hopes that there will be a more complete picture of the severity of the disease caused by Omicron.

This delay, however, is opposed by most publicly positioned scientists. The SAGE Scientific Committee advising the government has warned that failure to take immediate action risks increasing hospitalizations to at least 3,000 a day in the new year.
