The first £1 coins with King Charles have been put into circulation. Almost three million – 2.975 million to be exact – of the new plans will be in the pockets and coffers of people across the UK this week, via post offices and banks. One side of the coins depicts a pair of British bees, in honor of the King's passion for the natural world, with the monarch's official coinage effigy on the 'crown' side. The new coins will continue to circulate alongside those featuring the image of Queen Elizabeth II’ , which will be replaced over time as they become damaged or worn. Seven other coins – ranging from 1p to £2 – they have also been inspired by nature to reflect King's commitment to the environment.

The designs, which will be introduced in line with demand, are the 1p showing a hazelnut, the 2p red squirrel, the 5p oak leaf, the 10p grouse, the 20p pumpkin and the £2 featuring the national flowers – rose, narcissus, thistle and clover.

The 50p – depicting an Atlantic salmon – launched in November last year.

A public poll by the Royal Mint found the bee £1 coin was the favourite, followed by the red squirrel 2p
