The Limassol Municipal Council pays a debt to the dogs and their owners, creating a recreational park for dogs, said today the Mayor of Limassol, Nikos Nikolaidis, during the presentation of the first of its kind in the park, in the Municipality of Limassol.
Mr. Nikolaidis, together with members of the municipal council, officially presented the 8,000 sq.m. dog park, located on Agoras Street, in Zakaki and which is ready to operate as soon as the restrictive measures in relation to the theme parks are removed.
In his statements, the Mayor of Limassol stated that the space is divided into three sections, one for toys for dogs (A), one for walking with the owners (B) and a fenced area where dogs can move freely without a leash (C ).
He noted that the park was created in an area next to the municipal shelter for stray dogs “because we do not want the shelter dogs to feel lonely and certainly, with the visitors who will be here, it will be easier for them to find families to adopt them”.
“We are ready with the operating regulations, which we have drawn up in cooperation with the veterinary services and animal welfare organizations,” said Mr. Nikolaidis, adding that there are volunteers and officials who will take care of the area.
We expect, he continued, the world, the animal lovers to enjoy it and we are sure that with their suggestions, with the cooperation we have had so far with animal welfare organizations, this area will continue to improve day by day.
Asked whether there are thoughts for other dog parks within the municipal boundaries of the Municipality of Limassol, he said that there are thoughts for the creation of a, perhaps larger, park in the area of Fasoula, but also for smaller parks within the urban area.
However, he pointed out, “we will see how this will work, how the animal lovers will welcome it, what remarks they will submit to us and we are sure that the experience of this park will lead us to the next day”.
The first dog park of the Municipality of Limassol will be open every day of the week except Thursday, with winter hours (November – April 9 am-5pm) and summer hours (May – October 9 am-7pm).
According to a statement from the Municipality of Limassol, dog escorts must be over 15 years old, use the space at their own risk, be responsible for their dog's behavior, be constantly on site, as well as have their dogs tied up in areas A and B and clean their feces.
It is emphasized that it is forbidden to enter dogs with aggressive behavior, in sick dogs (the dog owner must present the vaccination booklet as well as the dog license), in dogs that are in mating period and in puppies under 4 years old.
In addition, dogs belonging to the breeds Pit Bull or American Pit Bull, Japanese Tosca, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brazileiro are not allowed to enter. The use of glassware, feeding and harassing animals is also prohibited.
