People with a history of cancer will now have the right from 1/1/2023 to enjoy benefits from insurance companies following an agreement reached on Thursday afternoon and announced by the Minister of Health Michalis Hatzipantela .

“I feel happy and happy because after an excellent meeting we had today with the Association of Insurance Companies, Europa Donna, OSAK and the Association of Banks and the Superintendent of Insurance Companies we have come to an agreement that from 1/1/2023 people with a history from cancer will be entitled to receive services from insurance companies for the purpose of granting loans, building a first home”, said the Minister of Health.

“This goal that we had set last May and everyone thought was unattainable, today is feasible. Our little Cyprus is among the first countries in the entire European Union to adopt this measure,” he said.

The initial plan, he clarified, is to implement the agreement for three years, when it will be reviewed. “The first step has been taken, let's look at the positives. We are one of the first countries to implement this agreement and then we will reassess it”, he added.

More about this agreement will be made public in the coming days after a joint communique is agreed together with Europa Donna and the President of Insurance Companies.

The President of the Board of Directors of Europa Donna Mary Perdiou said that “today is very important for us”. She thanked the Minister of Health for taking this initiative and sitting next to them to help them. to this big goal they had set.

“We are very satisfied with the response of the Insurance Companies, with whom we had a very constructive meeting and it seems that we have a common ground and we can proceed without even entering in legislative regulation”, he said.

It seems, he added, “that there is a good intention from the Insurance Companies and we as the Association of Cancer Patients, Europa Donna, declare ourselves very satisfied on behalf of the patients who will from now on be able to be insured and have equal access as the rest of the citizens in insurance contracts and by extension in financial facilities because it really was a big problem for patients when they wanted to take out a loan. And it seems that this will be overcome with today's agreement”.

On behalf of the Insurance Companies, Evangelos Anastasiadis said that the insurance industry is part of society and listens to society's needs.

“It is with great joy and willingness that we accepted the invitation of the Minister of Health to attend this meeting. We came in with a positive attitude, with proposals which I would say in their entirety were accepted and we are pleased to have reached an agreement, a six-point agreement, which will allow people diagnosed with cancer to enjoy the benefits of life insurance “, he added.
