The former Minister of Agriculture Andreas Papasolomontos passed away – He passed away at the age of 92
He passed away at the age of 92, Dr. Andreas Papasolomontos, former Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
According to an announcement by the family of the deceased, the funeral service will be held on Monday, August 26 from the Holy Church of Saints Constantine and Helen at 5:00 p.m. m.
The family of the deceased will receive condolences at the church from 4.30 to 5.00.
The deceased was Minister of Agriculture from January 1985 to November 1987.
Andreas Papasolomontos worked in the Ministry of Agriculture for nearly three decades. Among other things, he was the Director of the Department of Agriculture from 1968 to 1975, while from 1975 to 1985 he was Director General of the same Ministry until he was promoted to minister.
During his service at the Ministry of Agriculture, he was actively involved in the creation of the largest irrigation projects in Cyprus, such as the Paphos irrigation project, the Royal Pentashino project and the Southern Pipeline project.
In 1988 he was hired as director at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, (FAO), a position from which he retired in 1994, to continue his contribution to the international field of agriculture as an independent expert.
In this capacity he participated in a large number of missions of the United Nations and the World Bank around the world.
At the same time, he had an active participation in various boards of international organizations in the field of agriculture, such as “ICARDA”, ( “International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas”), the “CGIAR” (“The Consortium Group of International Agricultural Research Centres”), and “IPGRI”, (“The International Plant Genetic Resources Institute”.
