The GeSY has been in the same order for the last year – What is behind the stagnation?

ΙδΙα ταξη το Γε&Sigma ;Υ τον τελευταΙο χρόνο-Τι κρyβετα ι πiσω απo την στασιμoτητα;

The course of people's health in Cyprus is now divided into two eras: the pre-GeSy and the post-GeSy era. At the time when free public health was for certain beneficiary groups and at the time when it became universal and accessible to all.

In order to forget the dark era when the health of some of our fellow human beings was considered more important than the health of other fellow human beings, to complete the legislative work, to start the operation of the NHS, to be successfully implemented and to move on to its next stages, the two turned their backs first Health Ministers of the Anastasiades administration. Giorgos Pamboridis and Konstantinos Ioannou played – each in the phase they were called upon to manage – played a very important role to overcome the resistance, many of which even came from within the Government and the ruling party, to let the water go down the drain and the NHS from its infancy to full implementation, even if it had to learn to walk in the midst of a global pandemic.

However, the fact that, with the assumption of the health portfolio by Michalis Hatzipandelas, is problematic , under better conditions, stagnation is observed. While the NHS became embedded in everyday life and our collective consciousness, while it became a way of life for health professionals and citizens and while it managed to grow in the midst of a global health crisis, recently it gives the impression that it has remained the same order.

The current Minister of Health does not seem to show the same determination to face problems, which inevitably arise from the fact that the system is still stabilizing and developing, nor to increase the provision of services. He does not show the same willingness to invest in the NHS, nor to act as a shield to protect him from those who never digested his success.

In fact, Mr. Hatzipantela himself caused the biggest crisis of the last few months regarding the National Social Security System (which was possibly the worst crisis surrounding the system since the day it was launched), as his decision to adopt the recommendation of the KEBE for the appointment of Dr. Petrou Agathangelou's appointment to the Board of Directors of the Health Insurance Organization caused a domino of developments, which on the one hand exposed the Government and on the other led to resignations, audits for incompatibility and various other issues, which put the system itself, its services and patient service in second place and made the procedures the only protagonist of the developments for some time. In essence, the Government, whose work is the National Health Service and perhaps the most important achievement of the ten-year term of Nikos Anastasiadis, managed to send the most wrong messages in terms of defending the system and create suspicions as to its real intentions for  future of.

Above all, however, the Minister's decision was indicative of his own lack of understanding of the dynamics that formed around the National Health Service. About who were the people who supported it from the first moment and who were on the other side. There is no excuse for the fact that Mr. Hatzipandela chose to send the biggest supporters of the system the message that he does not respect them. Nor, of course, is there an explanation for the political reading of the intentions he made, underestimating the reactions.

The reality is that lately we don't see the GeSY taking steps forward. We do not see an increase in the services offered, we do not see an improvement in the existing ones. We do not see the elimination of any distortions that clinical experience has shown. Instead, we see restrictions aimed at savings, without a serious financial problem, which put health professionals in dilemmas they should never have.

Some more cunning think that this stagnation prepares the ground for after the elections. When, in theory, the hands of some, who have never digested the idea and architecture of the single-insurance GeSY, and without the risk of being punished at the ballot box by the citizens, intend to do what they wanted from the beginning and get involved in the GeSY privately interests. The less the NHS develops, the more it avoids solving problems that should have been solved long ago, the more it displeases health professionals, who in turn are forced to displease patients, the easier the deconstruction planned by these strangers will be. – known.

The Government and especially the Minister of Health should rise to the occasion. To start investing again in the NHS. To offer him all the necessary supplies to develop further. And to protect it from attacks, without any discount. The NHS is our national treasure and we must treat it as such.
