We enter this new period with the very important development of the appointment of an envoy of the UN Secretary-General, with sincere political will, to contribute constructively and undertake other initiatives, so that create the conditions for the immediate resumption of negotiations, said today the Government Spokesman Mr. Konstantinos Letympiotis.
In his statements to journalists in Paphos after the Epiphany celebrations, the Government Spokesman said that “I wish the whole world good enlightenment, may God enlighten us and let's hope that 2024 will be a year of hope and light, that there will be light in our life and certainly light in our country. Let 2024 be the year of Cyprus' redemption”.
Asked to refer to the issue of the appointment of a UN Secretary-General's envoy for the Cyprus issue, Mr. Letympiotis said that “we consider and welcome as very positive the fact that yesterday, with an official announcement, the Secretary-General has appointed Ms. Angela Quellard as an envoy. We and the President of the Republic personally, from the first moment of taking office, what we had conveyed, what we insist on is the appointment of an envoy from the Secretary General as soon as possible, but also the realization of his very important contacts with us , but also with the other side, it should create the conditions for the resumption of negotiations.
We enter this new period with this very important development with sincere political will, to contribute constructively, to take other initiatives, the President of the Republic himself personally, so that the conditions are created for the immediate resumption of negotiations from the point where they have been interrupted, with the aim, of course, of a sustainable, final solution to the Cyprus issue, on the basis of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation solution with political equality”.
