This is the spokesperson's statement:
The criticality of the moment demands seriousness and sobriety. The beneficial humanitarian role of our country is recognized internationally.
We would expect AKEL not to easily adopt erroneous views that aim to harm our country.
As the Republic of Cyprus we remain part of the solution and not part of the problem and this is recognized by the international community. If what really interests us is the preservation and protection of our country, this should also be reflected in the benefit of our public positions.
AKEL's announcement:
The explosive war climate in the region poses enormous and literally deadly risks to the security of all states and peoples in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. Our entire neighborhood is threatened with a generalized conflagration with incalculable and dramatic consequences. Against this backdrop, the continued concentration of US military forces on our island, on and off British bases, heightens the risks and concerns.
The Christodoulidis government must reflect on the dangers created for the country and our people by the continued concentration of foreign military forces on our island, in the context of their war plans and operations. By consenting to this involvement of Cyprus, the Christodoulidis government is making our country part of the problem. AKEL calls on the government to recognize the dangers to the country's security caused and multiplied by this involvement and service of the US military forces. As we have repeatedly underlined, let those who are not moved by the massacre of the Palestinian people, feel the dangers for the security of the Cypriot people.
AKEL emphasizes that the role of Cyprus must be a bridge of peace and humanitarian aid, not a base of foreign armies. Cyprus must join its voice with everyone in the international community working for de-escalation of tension, cessation of hostilities and the Israeli war in Gaza in order to pave the way for a solution to the Palestinian issue on the basis of UN resolutions, for lasting peace and security in our area.
