With the impressions obtained by the Central Secretariat of AKEL. after the meetings that its members had with the two allegedly dominant candidates in the discussions in the party, the Politburo meets to complete at this stage the selection of candidate support. The General Assembly, which is meeting today with a decision – the forerunner of the discussions in the plenary of the Central Committee – will give the position on where the body is leaning and will therefore argue before the wider body of more than one hundred members.
The “interview”
The meetings of the two leading candidates for AKEL, Achilleas Dimitriadis and Andreas Mavrogiannis, with the members of the party Secretariat were considered by the Left executives as crucial for any decision of the Politburo. The meeting with Achilleas Dimitriadis took place last Saturday and lasted more than two hours, while the one with Andreas Mavrogiannis last Monday lasted more than three hours. As “P” understands, in fact the two potential candidates for AKEL went through a peculiar form of “interview”. It was, in fact, the last phase of the leadership group's reflection, which with this tactic sought to form, as far as possible, a complete picture of the positions and perceptions of the two candidates before the decisive decision of the Politburo today. This practice is not illogical for a party that is literally under suffocating pressure, knowing that the decision it will make will be, under the circumstances as they have been formed, critical, but also full of risk for the next day in the party . Six of the seven members of the Central Secretariat participated in the contacts between the two and the leadership of the party and an attempt was made to hear the views of Dimitriadis and Mavrogiannis on their basic guiding positions on a number of issues, but also in relation to the general positions of AKEL:/p>
- A series of issues that arise from the current phase of the Cyprus problem as perceived by Achilleas Dimitriadis, issues related to legal aid and his professional employment in the compensation committee
- The main positions of Andreas Mavrogiannis, not only in the current situation, but also in the period of the previous five years in relation to the manipulations of President Anastasiadis and his attitude as a negotiator throughout the previous period.
- The two candidates were invited to take a stand and comment on AKEL proposals in relation to natural gas and its role in shaping developments in the Cyprus issue.
- They were put up for discussion with the candidates the issues related to the change of state and various manifestations of this process. That is, issues related to justice reforms, the chapter on public service changes, but also a major issue of entanglement and corruption.
