The redevelopment of the Mackenzie beach front will absorb the largest amount from the development budget of the Municipality of Larnaca for 2021. As we have written in previous reports, the new year is considered the most important in recent years for Larnaca, as major projects are expected to be delivered. infrastructure implemented in the city center with European funding, ie the new Municipal Market, the renovation of the club and the former community center and the layout of roads and sidewalks in the city center to facilitate the disabled. This fact is also reflected in the 2021 development budget, which was recently approved by the plenary of the municipal council. It provides a total expenditure of 13.7 million euros and the largest amounts concern the completion of the above projects (a total of around six million euros), most of which have entered the final stage of implementation. However, the largest expenditure from this year's development budget will be the radical regeneration of the Mackenzie coast, with an amount of over two million (2,082,500). This is a plan to completely remodel the area in front of and behind the existing recreation centers. The project is considered mature, as the construction plans and tender documents are ready. Its announcement will depend on its approval for European funding from the Recovery and Sustainability Fund. The plans envisage, among other things, a complete upgrade of the front part with the reconstruction of the sidewalk and the replacement of the lighting near the sea. The project is estimated to cost around three and a half million, which is why a budget of one and a half million has been provided from the development budget of 2022, within the three-year plan 2021-2023.
Environmental Center
In terms of costs related to new projects, the Ecological Walk of Alykon – Creation and Operation of an Information Center and the reconstruction of sidewalks on the coastal front of Finikoudes stand out. An amount of 273 thousand euros is foreseen for the salt pans and 357 thousand for the Finikoudes. In relation to the Information Center (Environmental Information Center of L / kas), it became possible to shake the procedures after many years of stagnation and it was decided to house him in the former leprosarium. To be precise, it has been decided to change the site from the original location near the Hala Sultan mosque and the scholars have been instructed to update the existing construction plans. The cost will be covered by the Department of Environment. The cost (over 700 thousand) for the restoration of the listed building where the former Cornaro Institute is housed is also considered significant. This building would be used for the temporary housing of the School of Marine Sciences and Technology, which, however, was destroyed by a government decision. The Municipality of Larnaca, however, intends to use the Kornaro landmark for temporary housing of the Maritec-X Center for Excellence in Marine Research. The goal is to complete the restoration within 2021.
