<p data-block-key=The funeral of journalist and businessman George Iliadis, who died at the age of 84, will take place on Wednesday in Nicosia. The news of his death was announced yesterday by the son-in-law of the deceased and elected President of the Nicosia Provincial Self-Government Organization, Konstantinos Yorkatzis, in a post on Facebook.

The funeral of George Iliadis will be held at 10:00 on Wednesday morning from the Holy Church of Constantine and Helen, while an hour earlier the family will receive condolences.

The Giorgos Iliadis was born in Nicosia in 1940. While still a student, the deceased joined the EOKA struggle, as a result of which he was arrested twice and sent to the Kokkinotrimithia detention center.

During during the Turkish rebellion of 1963-1964, he had taken part in the Resistance, in the area of ​​Agios Pavlos Prisons.

The deceased had been the editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Eleftherotypia” and the “Ethnikos Kyrykas” while, among other things, he had presented the shows “Fire Teams” and “Choris Oria” on RIK. He also worked as an advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the Cyprus issue.

The deceased was a close associate and personal friend of the former President of the Republic, Tassos Papadopoulos.


Giorgos Iliadis was married for 1.5 years to Aliki Vougiouklakis, with whom he got a divorce and then remarried his first wife. He had two children, Ilias and Eleni.

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulidis, in a written statement yesterday, Monday, expressed his sadness over the death by Giorgos Iliadis.

As President Christodoulidis mentioned, in addition to being a journalist who left his mark, the deceased was throughout his life also “an active citizen, noble and cultivated, with morals, possessing all the elements that make up a special personality”.

“I had the pleasure, as a young diplomat, to work with George Iliadis during his service at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and to see his excellent character and virtues of”, notes President Christodoulidis.

Furthermore, the Democratic Party (DIKO) in a press release expresses its sadness for the loss of Giorgos Iliadis, noting that “the deceased was a special person and an inexhaustible source of wisdom, kindness and generosity. His absence leaves a huge void in all of our hearts.”

“The leadership, executives and officials of the Democratic Party express their sincere condolences to the family of Giorgos Eliadis with the promise that we will keep his memory alive and that we will honor his legacy,” it states.

At the same time, with its announcement, EDEK expresses its sadness for the death of Giorgos Iliadis, noting that he was a pioneer and courageous journalist, a man with morals, knowledge, experiences, who offered to the homeland in any capacity and position he held.

Yorgos Iliadis, the announcement continues, was a dedicated defender of freedom of speech, democracy and the Nationalist Makarios in difficult times for the country.< /p>

Anastasia Papadopoulou, daughter of Tassos Papadopoulos, and godchild of Giorgos Iliadis, also wrote in her post on Facebook, “to the good godfather, my dear. Have a nice trip. I will miss you so much. I am sure, however, that your friend is waiting for you to say it like in the old days… Your memory is forever, my godfather.”

“Good day my dear father-in-law,” wrote Mr .Yorkatzis posting a photo of the deceased with his grandchildren.
