A new, symbolic protest event was organized yesterday at the Municipal Baths in Paphos by the Cypriot association of professional lifeguards, demanding better working conditions for its members. A similar event had recently taken place in Limassol. The aim of the association is to highlight the problems of professional lifeguards and to put pressure on the state to implement the SALAMIS plan in its entirety. Their main request is the extension of the beach coverage hours and the provision of modern equipment.
The president of the association, Mr. Panagiotis Arabis, in his statements noted that based on the national plan SALAMIS, 52 lifeguards were to be hired on a twelve-month basis. “Only 16 were hired, while the remaining 36 work as rescuers at Larnaca and Paphos airports.” He also said that no relevant law was passed by the Parliament, as was the initial commitment. ” The lifeguards again demanded the immediate upgrade of their scale from E-5 to E 7-8 and the establishment of the profession, an increase in the number of twelve months “and the removal of the injustice of 30 months, since in other services they all became permanent”. They also demanded the establishment of a single lifeguard service through the National Plan for Lifeguard and Safety of Organized Beaches SALAMIS or any other plan. The increased number of lifeguards on Paphos beaches in recent years has prevented several drownings and improved beach safety.
