How would you feel, when you find the first traffic light green, then all the rest are green. This is what the new urban traffic management system, which will be implemented in Limassol and Nicosia, aspires to achieve. April 5, 2024 has been set as the closing date for the submission of bids for the project “Supply, installation, configuration, operation and maintenance of a new urban traffic control (UTC) system in Limassol, which will be applied to 50 light-controlled junctions.

The Control Center from which all traffic lights will be controlled will be at the Head Offices of the Public Works Department in Nicosia. There will be no Control Center in Limassol. The system will also have the ability to connect up to 500 photo-controlled junctions all over Cyprus for remote monitoring. The project with a cost estimate of €7.13 million +VAT, includes a 24-month execution period and 5-year maintenance. It was announced by the Department of Public Works on January 19.

The system aims at better traffic management which will increase the traffic capacity of the road network, reduce vehicle travel time and upgrade road safety. The system will collect traffic data from sensors placed at key points of the road network in urban areas, process it in real time and give instructions on how to operate the traffic lights.

It will further adjust the timing of the green light according to traffic, with the aim of reducing delays, and coordinate the operation of neighboring light-controlled junctions in road corridors to reduce the “start-stop” phenomenon, while reducing fuel consumption and gas emissions pollutants. It can give priority to buses and emergency vehicles, but also inform immediately about breakdowns in traffic lights.

The aim of its installation is to prevent road collisions through immediate intervention, since it allows the implementation of strategies such as restricting access to specific areas and times. It also enables traffic monitoring and will provide control center intervention to bypass road works or road collisions.

The main advantages of the system are the reduction of travel time by 10-25%, delays by 15-30% and reduction of “stop-start” by 10-30%. As well as a reduction in Public Transport travel time by 28%, fuel consumption by 8-10%, pollutant emissions by 10-15% resulting in a reduction in air quality burden and an improvement in quality of life.
