The meeting of President Anastasiadis and AKEL is constructive - The way was opened for the reduction of the electricity consumption fee

The President of the Republic Mr. Nikos Anastasiadis received today, at the Presidential Palace, a delegation of the AKEL leadership with which he discussed issues related to the Energy sector, in the presence of the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry Mrs. Natasa Pileidou.

After the meeting, Ms. Pileidou told reporters, among other things, that the meeting was very constructive and during it the measures that have been implemented so far were presented.

He added that Cyprus was one of the first countries to reduce the cost of electricity and noted that “we will continue to consider measures that are considered appropriate to help consumers.”

Asked about AKEL's proposal to reduce the consumption tax, the Minister said that it is something that has already paved the way for the approval by the Council of Ministers last week of the bill to create a fund that allows for a reduction of the tax in the coming years.

“We will seek its immediate vote by Parliament and should consider the needs of the fund which is very important to be funded to be able to offer plans and incentives to citizens for the energy transition which is the best way to reduce costs. long-term “.

Regarding the proposal for tenders, Ms. Pileidou said that it is a much more complicated project for two reasons. “One is that the competitive market opens in October 2022, so any action must be taken at the same time ensuring the successful opening of the market. So the right balances must be found both legally and practically. “Secondly, the views of CERA must be taken into account”, said Ms. Pileidou.

He added that following the instructions of the President of the Republic, meetings will follow for a thorough discussion on this issue.

Asked about the terminal in Vasiliko, she said that “we are on a very good path” and the schedule remains as it is, that is, the summer of 2023.

He added that the problems that had been identified, to a large extent have been solved.

Asked if everything is going well in block 10 of the Cyprus EEZ, the Minister answered in the affirmative.
